I was wondering.

How important is it now to kill off the history of your computer?

You know what I'm saying, those darn cookies all search engines have, the stuff that back tracks all of the places you visited.

There is even spyware going into the software you've downloaded in the computer.

Not to mention all that crap SPAM, and I usually have no idea where they get my email address from.

The thing is, nothing is private anymore and how you are supposed to know if people aren't spying on you? Especially if you head into a suspicious website BY ACCIDENT, and you have the CIA or the FBI tracking your curious butt. Especially with that Patriot Act that got passed last year. I don't know, it just worries me!

I downloaded History Killer software and I was wondering how important is this now? It even kills off my pop up windows! So I might actually purchase this material.

They don't have the manpower to monitor the Net. But it can't hurt.

Hey Starlover!

It is very important to delete all your history and cookies at least once a month... Who knows what you have saved on there that someone could access. Most important is the cc#'s & Soc Sec #'s on any docs or cookies.

You HAVE to d-load this Spyware Removal program called AD-AWARE. It's on CNET or download.com and it's a must have. Once you run it you WOULDN'T BELIEVE how many spyware-based programs you have on your comp

If you use KAZAA, IT HAS SPYWARE built into the program. So for file-sharing use the upgrade version from Kazaalite.com

KazaaLite does not have spyware, cuts the advertising out, and offers you cool tools like AVI preview and Speed-Up which helps you download faster.

Check it out, it's worth it, trust me

Yep my brother has Kazaa on his computer and I got the worst feeling that there was spyware watching our moves! I guess my worries are right sometimes.

I downloaded history killer but it expires after 15 days, eventually I'll eliminate the spyware as well.

I'm actually thinking about purchasing the sofware! I hope it's the right move.

I wouldn't purchase jack!

You can the best Spyware removal programs on the Net for FREE at CNET.com or download.com

Get the latest version of "Ad-Aware" or "Spybot Search and Destroy"

All the updates for these programs will be free too!!!

Don't waste your money! Trust me, I have a friend in the industry

And GET RID of Kazaa for KazaaLite... Kazaa is a VERY BAD program for privacy...VERY BAD

You're right Kazaa is very nasty and it takes up a huge chunk of your hard drive! My brother's computer is slower then hell.

I can't stand it when I look up something personal and the site gets left behind in the history search engine. That's why I brought this up!

Privacy is so rare nowadays, it really is, and it's getting worse and worse!

LL is right!I use ad-aware and update it regularly. It`s one of the best free spyware removal programs out there. I use pop-up stopper by panicware (also free) and it prevents a lot of crap from getting in! I clean house weekly; I`m not paranoid, but my Virgo moon demands it

I had a Yahoo toolbar self-install on my Internet Explorer bar... and had to remove it.

Go to:

View

Toolbars
(look at the checked toolbar options; only checked ones should be "standard buttons", "address bar" & "links")
(If any others are checked, highlight & click; that should remove the extra buttons from your Internet Explorer toolbar)

Thanks L.L., did that & all I have checked is standard buttons & address bar. Should links be checked?
No sign of a trapped pop up there.

I had a web page jump my yahoo home called 'Xupiter'. I had the worst time hunting it down & zapping it. At about the same time this pop up started. I thought perhaps Yahoo had started using pop ups. I would love to zap it out of existence!!!

Personally I don't have my "links" checked, I think it's worthless, so I'd get rid of it.

Now if we're talking "pop-ups" here's what you need to do.

Goto: www.download.com

Enter SEARCH: "Ad Aware" (download the most popular/current version & install)

RUN Ad-Aware, don't mess with any settings, once it's done keep hitting next till it shows you all the spyware/pop-up programs on your comp. CHECK all those boxes for deletion, then DELETE.

Next: Go back to download.com

Enter SEARCH: SpyBot (download & install)
FYI - The actual "title" is Spybot Seek & Destroy, so you know...

Run it without changing any settings...

All the spyware/pop-up programs should already be checked once finished scanning, but if not, CHECK them all, and DELETE

RESTART your computer

RUN Scan disk on your hard drive

Then RUN Disk Defragmenter

RESTART again, and you're good!

If you can't find the "Scandisk" & "Defrag" right click on your hard drive, hit properties, click tools, and they're right there...

This should work, if it doesn't let me know

Meowser L.L.

You are my hero... it worked like a charm. Zap... Zap... all them buggers are in cyber hell now!!

I am running ad aware 6.0 and get updated regularly. Why did it let these get by it? I has so many in hickey file and ad aware says it cleans it

I`m thrilled to be free of the crap and my programs are running quicker. I still had the xupiter in there after ad aware said it deleted it; as well as search bars galore. Anyhow, thanks so much!!!!

Sorry to hear that Oxy!
There's only so much I can do w/o actually seeing with my own eyes what you speak of, once again, sorry...

J, as for how these infringers happens... I'm not "exactly" sure but I know when those little boxes popup that try to install a patch or software when you hit a site, and you could check the box the says "Always trust content from ...(so & so)"

When you accept that, whether or not you checked the box, it places a patch in your comp that collects info like your preferences, websites you visit, programs you have, and they try to sell you related products... sneaky, huh?

Lost Leo, just a note to share with you 'why' I had all that crap on my computer!

The neighbor boy had been comming in and using it for porn. No wonder I couldn`t keep out the stuff & it kept comming back. Some of it is on my hard drive & I`m clueless (without downloading program for 20$ ) how to dig it out. At least I`m in better shape that I was & a big thanks!

juniperb-how did you find out what the boy was up to? You can't just start a story like that and not give any details.

Oxy the boy was caught comming out of someone elses house, when questioned "what was he stealing", he replied nothing and after digging, it seems he`s entering homes and using computers for porn (he has one, but not internet access) Mine was on his list of pleasures. I had run Contentwatch & I was astounded, but it all made sense as all the happy crappy showing up was bizzare to say the least! I mean 'hooters' for goodness sake

They took his bike away and out in the sticks here, thats tantamount to taking your car, shoes and pants cuz you arn`t going nowhere without it(them)!

We never lock our door out here and still don`t plan too as he`s the only kid in a 3 mile radius & I think he`s had enough embarassment for a while! I know I have
