I enjoy a good face to face debate on my favorite topics.(I stay away from online politics tho ) The first turn off for me is when the other makes a blanket statement by using the word all. I`m done. I can`t get past it. All short people are tax evaders or all redheads pick their nose. I then realize a reasonable intelligent person has reached their limits on the debate. Name calling and snide insinuations. Also, when people attempt to debate feelings. You can't debate feelings. You feel what you feel. No debate there. ------------------ “The good things which belong to prosperity are to be wished, but the good things that belong to adversity are to be admired.” Seneca IP: Logged |

I agree with the all thing, juniperb, because it certainly is not the most accurate word in regards to many issues.Aside from personal attacks, I really don't care for drawn out assumptions based on inferences ... obviously you cannot possibly have heard everything a person has to say, so how can you say that you know exactly how they feel or think? Intolerant views, perhaps, are my biggest peeves, which I think closely relates to my disdain towards "superiority" complexes ... whether in belief, religion, race, sex, age, socio-economic status, etc. I suppose I also appreciate a debate more when those involved attempt to address most, if not all, of the points and questions presented for discussion. ------------------ "You must be the change you wish to see in the world." - Ghandi IP: Logged |

Loss of temper. A good debater can argue for either side nothwithstanding personal opinion or preference. Lose one's temper, and the debate is lost.------------------ "Never mentally imagine for another that which you would not want to experience for yourself, since the mental image you send out inevitably comes back to you." Peer garnering tactics. When someone gets that snide little smile on their face and looks around the room at other people for support of their position. Another is when they attempt to use phrases like liberal, bush-supporter, bleeding heart or any other sort of statement whose intent is to degrade another's credibility as a logical participant in the debate. The ho, ho, ho chuckle is one of my all time favorite pet peeves. I like to point out that what they are doing is akin to what children do in schoolyards when they have a weak argument. They either start pointing and laughing, or they start punching. daf IP: Logged |

I like the ALL thing too. My biggest one is loss of control over emotions. Mostly anger and rage ... people start spewing all kinds of nasty things from their mouths when they become overly emotional while engaged in a debate. IP: Logged |

You can pick your friends You can pick your nose But you cannot pick your friend's nose....LOL..sorry Juni - but that redhead statement made me think of that ..I hate when debate gets to the point where people fabricate events or facts. They just pull something out of the air - usually something quite malicious and call it truth. IP: Logged |
