I know I figure that if NPR, not exactly a mouthpiece for conservative interests, can cover a story like this, why can't other news organizations?
Here's a Major who's beloved by the surrounding populace - local orphans say, "I am from Iraq, but I scream and say that I am from the the USA Army because I love Major Garrity," and, "My mother gave me the love a son needs but Major Garrity gave me the kindness I need; thank you Major Garrity," and local shopkeepers still inquire after her now that she's back in PA - and stomped on soldiers as soon as she got a hint of improper conduct towards prisoners.
AND she did so without undue cost to the US Gov't - she got donations of games and soccer balls from rich Kuwaitis and clothes and supplies for the local orphanage by asking her soldiers to write to their local papers and ask for donations.
It makes one wonder both
* Why this story, and others like it, aren't covered in commercial media (I'll point to both a drive for profit in the news - what'll people actually watch? - and bias)
and
* How much more progress could be made if consideration as this officer has shown was displayed often enough to eclipse any lack of consideration and general "bad behavior" shown?
