TO ALL:I THINK THIS FORUM OUGHT TO HAVE AN OFFICIAL MOTTO. BELOW ARE 5 QUOTES, ANY OF WHICH WOULD SERVE WELL TO BE OUR G.U. "WORDS TO LIVE BY". I WOULD LIKE TO TAKE A POLL TO DETERMINE WHICH IS THE FAVORITE OF THE QUOTES AMONG YOU ALL. THEN I WOULD LIKE TO PROPOSE TO RANDALL THAT WE MAKE THIS OUR OFFICIAL MOTTO AND MISSION STATEMENT. PERHAPS IT CAN EVEN BE ADDED TO THE HOME PAGE UNDER THE GLOBAL UNITY DESCRIPTION. IF YOU WOULD, PLEASE VOTE FOR 1 OF THE 5 BELOW: 1) "Discretion of speech is more than eloquence; and to speak agreeably to him with whom we deal is more than to speak in good words or in good order." -Francis Bacon
2) "A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger." -Proverbs (ch. 15, v. 1)
3) "Speak not at all, in any wise, till you have somewhat to speak; care not for the reward of your speaking, but simply and with undivided mind for the truth of your speaking." -Thomas Carlyle
4) "Whatever words we utter should be chosen with care for people will hear them and be influenced by them for good or ill." -Buddha 5) "Be a pattern to others, and then all will go well; for as a whole city is affected by the licentious passions and vices of great men, so it is likewise reformed by their moderation." -Varnhagen von Ense's Memoirs
The one below is also one of my personal favorites but I think it too narrow in scope for purposes of a general motto. Well worth noting, however.... "It was later when I realized that sarcasm was the weapon of the weak."
--Gene, from A Separate Peace by John Knowles

Hey, Paras!!! Even though you addressed me on the Paras/Jwhop thread, I can't respond b/c it's strictly for the 2 of you guys to work it out. So, just know that I heard ya' but if I responded on the same thread, I would be violating my own request!!! IP: Logged |

May I suggest another? Words have the power to both destroy and heal. When words are both true and kind, they can change our world. --Buddha This thread brings to mind something my mother always said to me. It is simple and true.
