Antarctic Ozone Hole Smaller This Year -Scientists
Fri Oct 1, 2004 12:54 AM ET

WELLINGTON (Reuters) - A gaping hole in the ozone layer over Antarctica appears to have shrunk by about 20 percent from last year's record-breaking size, New Zealand scientists said on Friday.
The National Institute of Water & Atmospheric Research (NIWA) said its measurements backed up NASA satellite data showing the hole peaked at about 9 million sq miles compared with 11 million sq miles in 2003.

The ozone layer sits about 9-19 miles above the earth, filtering harmful ultraviolet rays that can cause skin cancer.

Industrial chemicals containing chlorine and bromine used in refrigerators and aerosols have been blamed for thinning the layer because they attack the ozone molecules, causing them to break apart.

The only inhabited area that might possibly be affected by the hole would be the southern tip of South America, he said.

Under the 1987 Montreal Protocol, more than 180 signatory states have committed to phasing out the use of nearly 100 ozone-damaging substances.

Yeah Ozone, if this continues, that Ozone-less hole will shrink to a pin point and then vanish.

If I were you Ozone, I'd find some damn big corks and plug all those volcanoes because volcanic eruptions do more to destroy the Ozone-layer than all of man's puny efforts.

Looks like the President's environmental policies are working and working well, at least on the Ozone depletion issue. If you'd like to send the President a thank you letter Ozone, I'll give your the address of the White House. No rush there Ozone, he'll be there for 4 more years.

Yeah if Bush is only there in Washington(DC that is)maybe half of the time from extending his vacation time to three more months per year, your better off just giving me the number of the country club in Texas that he plays golf at, so I can get a hold of him.

I really do see Bush's policies working for the environment JW, the other day I saw on the news that a bunch of people said that George W. Bush is the best president that this country has ever had, now I know for a fact that it's not lava that is making all thoughs eruptions and earthquakes, it's just Reagan turning over in his grave a couple of dozen times or so! Wasn't he just burried only couple of months ago?!

You might want to send your letters of thanks to the Sun, since it creates ozone.

Let's assume Bush is as evil as some think. Heck, maybe he really is a lizard. Let's further assume that he wants to make the Earth much warmer for all his alien reptile friends, so he instructs his aides to "destroy the Earth's ozone layer." After attempting to do so, his aides would have to come to Bush and admit that this is impossible (short of destroying the Sun). We couldn't significantly alter the ozone layer--not even if we tried to.

Things are progressing nicely Ozone. You're well on your way to becoming a Republican.

You're near the breaking point Ozone. Better put on your tinfoil hat if you don't want to go any further rightward. Those 2 Satellites over America just keep beaming ELF radiation you know. Resistance is futile.

Well, I'm not rich enough to be a Republican yet and I'm too freewilled to be the other three choices, so I guess I'm just going have to make due to be just a regular Ozonefiller for the time being.
