Let's take a minute here to review something that I seem to have missed. Or maybe I'm just an idiot that doesn't know anything, but why is it such a slur to be called a Liberal? Or is my definition of a Liberal not the same as everyone else's?

I consider myself a Liberal- I believe in separation of church and state, think that homosexual marriages should absolutely be legalized, think that we should work more with other countries, think that we should care more about the enviroment and keeping our Earth clean. I believe in progress, and I'm extremely glad that I live in a society that's much more tolerant than that of the 'good 'ole days'.

So, I don't really understand why people use the word liberal as an insult, but then, maybe I'm not seeing the bigger picture.

I've wondered that myself, and also why "conservative" is another dirty word.

I asked the same kind of thing before.

I even had someone post a thread about me, asking me what I considered myself. It didn't bother me, of course, I just don't consider myself either.

I have noticed that people in this forum are very much aware of what label they go by or what party they belong to. So, I find myself using the words themselves. I, for one, don't think of either word as dirty.

I sure hope someone responds to your question who has been flinging around words like those as insults, even if it's just for their perspective.

I have said it before I don't think there is anything wrong with "liberal" or "conservatives" They are both good in their own ways and bad in their own ways. It depends on maintaining an equal balance and not going too far to the left and too far to the right.

Our country, to be a true democracy, needs to have more than just way of thinking about things. We need our idealists and we need people to sort of pull in the reigns now and then. There is always more than one way of seeing things and doing things. If we did not have those different views we would soon collapse as a nation. This nation was founded on dissent by a group of people that some today would label radicals. Their actions were very radical and some would call their views of what kind of nation they wanted to establish as very liberal for it's time.

Ronald Reagan during his administration began this stuff about liberals. He attributed negative things to it. Bush has furthered that during his regime. To the extreme in fact.

I don't consider myself either a liberal or a conservative. They are really just labels and I don't like labels. Nor am I a Democrat or Republican. I vote for who I think is the best man to lead the country. Unfortunately until we get election reforms that usually turns out to be a choice between just two men. I think that is wrong and should be changed. The American people should choose who they want to run for President. We should also do away with the electoral college and choose our leader by popular vote alone. That might be a liberal suggestion to some who want to maintain the status quo.

I don't think liberals or conservatives even truly exist as a group because if you think about it all of us can be conservative in our views and opinions of some things and liberal about others.
