Picture of U.S. Soldier Clinging to Dead Iraqi Girl Draws Attention

(May 6) — A photo of a U.S. soldier clinging to a fatally injured Iraqi child has managed to capture attention and much of the violence rampant in Iraq.

Watch Video: Story Behind Dramatic Photo

Maj. Mark Bieger is shown tending to an Iraqi girl, who died in a dual blast attack in Mosul, Iraq, on Monday. Freelance photographer Michael Yon said Bieger was running to get her to an U.S. Army hospital for help.

"He wanted to get her to American surgeons immediately. So Maj. Bieger wrapped the little girl up in the blanket," Yon said. "He was telling soldiers, 'We're moving out.' "

Yon said Bieger tried to comfort the little girl as he cradled her, stopping every so often to talk to her.

Bieger is the operations officer of an Army Stryker unit in Mosul, which conducts dangerous search and destroy missions.

Bieger has three children of his own. His wife, Amy, says he was undoubtedly thinking of them at that moment.

"That is exactly how he would take care of any other child that he saw in need, just like he would his own," she said.

The American surgeons could not save the little girl. She and another child died as a result of the attack, and another 15 were injured.

"He just kept saying it was a very bad day," said Amy, "so I knew it tore him up."

ABC News' Elizabeth Vargas filed this report for "World News Tonight."

That is a very sad photograph tranquil. And yet, beautiful too, I think, if you look close enough.

It still amazes me that, surrounded by war, surrounded by enough blood and hate and violence to turn any of us into barbaric monsters, so many of our troops somehow find a way to hold on to their humanity.

TP, I resent your asinine presumption that those who supported the war on Saddam Hussein's Iraq and the general war on terrorism are responsible for that child's death.

Unless, you are prepared to argue that it was a coalition bomb, mortar etc., which caused the blast...and not even then.

In general, it's people just like you who cause/permit the set of circumstances to arise that make war inevitable. The Neville Chamberlains, Clinton's, Albright's and the others with their heads stuck firmly up their as*es.

Later, someone else has to step in and clean up the messes those who think like you permitted to develop in the first place while people like you snipe from the sidelines.

Only in your little make believe world is everyone sane, rational and in possession of enough good will to iron out their differences and self interests around a coffee table.

Sometimes I do wish the radical leftists would pull their heads out of their collective as*es. It's ruining their posture.

Yes..I see your point TP (also short for toilet paper..how appropriate).

We are there because of the insurgents needs to KILL there own people. The Soldier pictured is not angry or mourning OUR being there..he is saddened by how evil their own people can be to kill a child to make a point.

WE do not kill their children as retribution for their actions...THEY kill innocent people to cause fear and hysteria...

So yeah..you didn't mean to do it, but you actually demonstrated WHY I SUPPORT THE WAR..to stop idiots like those that serve Saddam and the terrorists from KILLING their own innocent PEOPLE...especially CHILDREN...

But, you are probably one of those people that would actually like to just let it happen, as long as your life isn't affected right? Who cares about the children when they were tortured, raped and murdered right TP? Where were YOU and others like you when that was happening? You didn't care...but now that Bush is in office and you hate him..of COURSE you care about children dying (even though it is still by the hand of their own people). It just gives you kindling for your fire doesn't it?

The very least you could do is post the ENTIRE article instead of the drek you posted which does NOT explain how the child died (from the hands of a car bomber) your article (or snippit) actually insinuates WE did the bombing..

Now if the soldiers would have killed her I think the article might have stated that.

I feel everyone needs to see the reality of what really goes on during war.

Us being there makes the insurgents even more angry and more violent. This did not have to happen. And it sad because even if saddam was still there it would have sucked anyways.

Oh well I guess this is what happens when you live in a crappy world.

And what do you mean where was I when this all happened?

Where the hell was our govt "the freedom lovers" when this was happening for many years? They should have taken saddam out many many years ago.

They are very brave just for stepping in there. I couldn't even watch an animal die imagine me being there?

I cannot find a picture like that beautiful though. The little girl has died and the soldier is crying about it. It's depressing.

Writer Michael Yon is in Iraq, embedded with the Stryker Brigade, and took the heart-breaking photo above. Here is his blog account (hat tip ROFASix and Murdoc Online):

Major Mark Bieger found this little girl after the car bomb that attacked our guys while kids were crowding around. The soldiers here have been angry and sad for two days. They are angry because the terrorists could just as easily have waited a block or two and attacked the patrol away from the kids. Instead, the suicide bomber drove his car and hit the Stryker when about twenty children were jumping up and down and waving at the soldiers. Major Bieger, I had seen him help rescue some of our guys a week earlier during another big attack, took some of our soldiers and rushed this little girl to our hospital. He wanted her to have American surgeons and not to go to the Iraqi hospital. She didn't make it. I snapped this picture when Major Bieger ran to take her away. He kept stopping to talk with her and hug her.
The soldiers went back to that neighborhood the next day to ask what they could do. The people were very warming and welcomed us into their homes, and many kids were actually running up to say hello and to ask soldiers to shake hands.

Eventually, some insurgents must have realized we were back and started shooting at us. The American soldiers and Iraqi police started engaging the enemy and there was a running gun battle. I saw at least one IP who was shot, but he looked okay and actually smiled at me despite the big bullet hole in his leg. I smiled back.

One thing seems certain; the people in that neighborhood share our feelings about the terrorists. We are going to go back there, and if any terrorists come out, the soldiers hope to find them. Everybody is still very angry that the insurgents attacked us when the kids were around. Their day will come.

Who the hell is tlaking about clinton? You see that is the problem. if you are against something then you are a democrat.

And whats up with the radical leftist crap? You use that line in every post. Find a new line.

Only in your little make believe world is everyone sane, rational and in possession of enough good will to iron out their differences and self interests around a coffee table.

I feel sorry for you jwhop. You will never know the real truth about what goes on in this world. You are just an old man in a small town who is a republican and loves to attack other people just because they do not agree with you. I could care less about clinton, bush, or you. You are trapped in a fantasy world where everything is just dandy isn't it.

I think you hit the nail on the head here Tranquil. I think Jwhop just uses this forum as a vent for his anger, and has no real touch with reality/human issues. I don't bother arguing with him simply because he's obviously so closed minded there would be no point. He uses one sinded buzz words like "radical leftist" that really have no meaning. Essentially everything he sais is meant to incite and annoy, and has no real content or value.

Nice try TP but no sale.

I didn't mention the word democrat...in fact, I did mention Neville Chamberlain, among others. Pretty sure you haven't a clue who he was or how he fits in with the others I did mention in relation to the general discussion of wars and their causes.

I would give you a history lesson but in as much as the property owners of New York already paid the price in property taxes for your education and it failed, I have no reason to suspect it would meet with any more success.

You seem to make a habit of being wrong. Just for the record, I spent most of my life in the greater Los Angeles, California area...not exactly the small town you have in mind. Nor is the greater Tampa Bay area exactly the small town you have in mind either.

We have a lot of experience dealing with New Yorkers with an attitude who come down to Florida for the winter. They're loud, obnoxious and rude.....in general. In dealing with those types of New Yorkers, it's mind over matter. We don't mind and they don't matter.

We're working on a new winter/vacation plan for New Yorkers. We're calling it "Overwinter your money in sunny Florida". Of course, we don't automatically assume all New Yorkers are loud, obnoxious and rude and therefore should send their money to Florida and stay home in New York. We let their actions speak for themselves and be the determining factor...like yours have.

Sorry you aren't able to connect the dots fast enough to keep up.

BlueRoamer, did I mention how irrelevant those are who are defined by what they are against, those who have no ideas of their own as how to fix what's wrong in the world, those who espouse a very broad theme without the detail, drive or intellectual capacity to really make a difference?

To coin an old phrase BlueRoamer, rhetoric, ribbons in the lapel and awareness days "don't feed the bulldog".

Sad how new york schools suck. The govt hardly gives them money. So singers get together and donate. Jesus christ even Bill Gates had to complain to our own govt about it and even donated money. We are not dumb. In fact New Yorkers are smart. Smart but rude. Oh well.

Oh please I have been to La. New York is way more mixed and open minded.

I worked with the census and well we know more about what lies in what area.

Yup thats us....rude. Don't like it huh? LOL we usually tell it like it is

MISSISSIPPI *******

The name of this tune is Mississippi Goddam
And I mean every word of it

Alabama's got me so upset
Tennessee made me lose my rest
And everybody knows about Mississippi Goddam

Alabama's got me so upset
Tennessee made me lose my rest
And everybody knows about Mississippi Goddam

Can't you see it can't you feel it
It's all in the air
I can't stand the pressure much longer
Somebody say a prayer

Alabama's got me so upset
Tennessee made me lose my rest
And everybody knows about Mississippi Goddam

This is a show tune
But the show hasn't been written for it yet

Hound dogs on my trail
Schoolchildren sitting in jail
Black cat crossed my path
I think every day's gonna be my last
Lord have mercy on this land of mine
We're all gonna get it in due time

I don't belong here I don't belong there
I've even stopped believing in prayer
Don't tell me I tell you
Me and my people just about do
I've been there so I know
Keep on saying go slow

But that's just the trouble too slow
Washing the windows too slow
Picking the cotton too slow
You're just plain rotten too slow
Too damn lazy too slow
Thinking's crazy too slow

Where am I going
What am I doing
I don't know I don't know
Just try to do your very best
Stand up be counted with all the rest
Cos everybody knows about Mississippi Goddam

I bet you thought
I was kidding didn't you

Picket lines school boycots
They try to say it's a communist plot
All I want is equality
For my sister my brother my people and me

Yes you lied to me all these years
You told me to wash and clean my ears
And talk real fine just like a lady
And you'd stop calling me Sister Sady

Oh but this whole country is full of lies
You're all gonna die and die like flies
I don't trust you anymore
You keep on saying go slow go slow

But that's just the trouble too slow
Desegregation too slow
Mass participation too slow
Unification too slow
Do things gradually too slow
Will bring more tragedy too slow

Why don't you see it why don't you feel it
I don't know I don't know
You don't have to live next to me
Just give me my equality

And everybody knows about Mississippi
Everybody knows about Alabama
Everybody knows about Mississippi Goddam
That's it

Imagine

Imagine there's no heaven,
It's easy if you try,
No hell below us,
Above us only sky,
Imagine all the people
living for today...

Imagine there's no countries,
It isnt hard to do,
Nothing to kill or die for,
No religion too,
Imagine all the people
living life in peace...

Imagine no possesions,
I wonder if you can,
No need for greed or hunger,
A brotherhood of man,
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...

You may say Im a dreamer,
but Im not the only one,
I hope some day you'll join us,
And the world will live as one.

New York schools may suk but it's not from a lack of money. New York taxpayers are spending about $10,000 per pupil per year and getting little to show for it.

Sadder still is that graduates of the New York's public school systems and others think they're educated.

Hello lib-speak!

BR....isn't that the pot calling the kettle black..LMAO

TP,

I have felt this way about the war and our armed forces for years, my fiance being in the Army is irrelevent. I do not base my heart felt opinions on what other people do - but instead on the information that I have undertaking and assimilated into my own mind.

I find it funny that you keep insinuating that you are open minded based soley on being a New Yorker...especially since you are one of the most narrow-minded and culturally biased humans I have every encountered in an "open minded" forum such as this. You constantly put down every other state, town, various ethnic groups and so forth..and yet you always come back too "Duh..don't you know how smart, open-minded and ethnically diverse New York is?"

I also find it ironic that you would keep using NYC as a standard when they are almost even more xenophobic than the entire state of Georgia.

For someone from a big city you have a very small view and misperception of the world. You constantly resort to calling people that differ from you a hick, saying they must be mentally inferior because they come from a small town or what you perceive to be a small town and yet your ignorance of others cultural backgrounds is only surpassed by those neo-nazi geeks that think color determines intelligence.
