Ronald Reagan

Former President Ronald Reagan was named the "Greatest American" of all time in an interactive contest tonight, topping fellow Republican Abraham Lincoln.

Of more than 2.4 million votes in the survey sponsored by America Online, Reagan, who died last year after a long bout with Alzheimer's disease, captured the title with 24 percent of ballots, just edging out Lincoln by 0.44 percent, according to host Matt Lauer.

"The memory is fresh," said Reagan's son, Ron Jr. "People remember the funeral. ... I'm sure he would be very honored to be in the company of all these great gentlemen."

The rest of the top five were civil-rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. (19.7 percent), George Washington (17.7 percent) and Benjamin Franklin (14.9 percent).

"Ronald Reagan was a man of courage," said John Washington, ancestral nephew of George Washington. "These are all distinguished men, but Ronald Reagan, I think he deserves his place here at the top of this list."

The second half of the top 10, already established from voting in previous weeks, had President George W. Bush at No. 6, followed by Bill Clinton, Elvis Presley, Oprah Winfrey and Franklin Roosevelt.

The event was broadcast by the Discovery Channel, as ordinary citizens were able to cast votes by phone or the Internet.

So I guess that their will be no other greater American that will ever(or has ever)lived then that of Reagan and no one will ever come to the top ten of this list then the ones that have been chosen, right?

So I wonder who would it be that will come first as being the #1 worst American?

Gee, I wonder, hmmmm!

Stupid! Just.....stupid!

It was done through voluntary polling. People's choice style I think, so those who didn't know or didn't care weren't included. I think I saw a commercial for it on tv.

Only the americans who have no brain would be that dumb enough to actually vote george washington into the top 5.

These people are so dumb. They no nothing at all. Pretty smart voting a slave owner into the top 5 greatest american list.

Just shows half the people in this country just vote...because well he was the first president or he was a democrat or republican or I just like him.

Idiots.

I just don't understand how people can rate anyone anything that resembles and defines as an American, that's like me saying, "If I didn't know Osama bin Laden any better, I've would of said that he's a very, very bad American!"!

Or maybe something like, "Charles Manson could of been a good American, if he wasn't so evil in his ways!"!

Or maybe, "That French guy is a real @$$hole, thank God he's not an American!"

See what I'm talking about?

It's not that I don't think that Reagan is a bad person, or that he's not a great president during his time in office, but I feel my intellence being insulted with him being called a "Great American"(or anyone in that matter) just because he did great things in his life!

I think that Ronald Reagan was a great president, PERIOD!

It's because that one of the major points that I like to try to make about the notion of whether or not rating someone as being a "Great American", which for someone doing great thing(s) in they're lives should be make to the belief as being a "Great American", for that makes a distinguishable fallacy to the what the point of that person's deeds that he or she has performed and make the whole claim as being a "Great Anything" totally false!

What's the difference whether or not that person is or was an American or a Tazmanian? Nothing! If the person was a "she" does that make her a "Great(est) Female"? What if the person was an hermaphrodite, does that make that person "The Greatest Hermaphrodite that ever lived"?

This is the ideal coined term of the reason of "Malignant Egophoria" has come to being!

I'd rather consider the person to be a "Great Person" in general, that has at least tried to help all humanity in the world of all time!

Otherwise all of this is brought to nothing none other then a deception of an identity clause and that we accept those standards, which I do not!

I dunno Lovely, I think that we need to wait throught out another year or so before anybody gets induced into The Rock-N-Roll Hall of Fame.

We just got to wait and see!

What ever happend to Gearge Washington, Thomas Jefferson ???

You guys remeber them rite ? They sorta put all on the line to create this formerly great nation .

Washington even put alot of his own crops cash [including his marijuana crops] into funding the war against the supresing British.

I guees that was no big deal though,,,

these modern leaders are so much braver and more self sacrifising then the founding Fathers.

Shite- maybe Ben Franklin was just a big panty waist ? All he did was hand over a declaration of indipendance to the almighty king of Britian. No big deal realy.

And General Lee, he didnt take any risks either, no way, never once stood up for what he believed in a bit. Maybe the modern text books are rite when they give children of america the impresion that the Confederacy was only fighting to keep there rights to slavery..

Sure, that must be it,,, silly me, sorry everybody for waisting your time.

ok, bye bye then.

Reagan had his strengths, to be sure, but I'm having a hard time giving much credence to a poll that lists Oprah Winfrey and Elvis Presley amongst the top ten greatest Americans. Oprah and Elvis??? I guess the philistines have officially taken over.

I would have voted for Jefferson or Lincoln.

On the contrary, I like Martin very much. He would certainly be in my top 5. I think he was a Prophet of the highest order and touched by the Christ-Being on at least two occasions. Perhaps in another age he would have been see as an Isaiah or Elijah.

It's silly to be "on the side" of any race. Race is too temporary. We slip our skins too easily.
Are you Caucasian, Tranquil? You sometimes have the sound of a white girl who wishes she wasn't.

Nope. Not Caucasian.

Whether I am white or not, I would never deny my own race or feel bad about it.

You're right. Denying it is silly too. Another extreme - just on the opposite end of the spectrum. Race - it is what it is. Why do some make such a big deal about it? I sometimes meet extreme Liberals who seem guitly about being white. It's odd. I also don't understand this whole Latino thing. Filling out a form recently, I noticed I had the option of checking "caucasian" or "latino". If I were from Sapin would which would I check off? If I were Mexican, but without any Indian blood, which would I check? When did latino become an entirely new race rather than a branch (I can't say sub-race here because I don't think were talking biology now)of the Caucasian race, like Celtics or Nordics or Slavics?

Of course, I'm out here in the country now and not a big city girl like you, so what the hell do I know?

They do that with latinos because they are so mixed.

For example.

There are arab hispanics, white hispanics, chinease hispanics, black hispanics, even jewish hispanics.

So it would all depend on what the person wants to choose. DUH

What are you so worried about anyways?

They are the ones who have to deal with is.

I worked with the cenus bureau. And whatever they checked off was there problem.

When you worked with the census bureau, were they at all interested in accuracy?

Not worrried really. Just thought it was a little strange. The form said "race" and latino is not a race. So I wondered what was going on. Obviously I'm out of the loop. In this particular case, that's ok with me.

Thanks for the info.

I never liked the word latino as a race either. my mother likes it.

We're so mixed what don't even know what to say.

We have to much different types of blood in us.

Oh well that's life.

If people ask me. I basically tell it like it is.
