Finger Length Predicts Aggression in Men

Without pointing any fingers, a new study suggests a way to take the measure of tough characters.

The research, done at the University of Alberta and announced Wednesday, found a connection between the length of the male index finger relative to the ring finger and the tendency to be aggressive.

No such connection was found in women.

Scientists have known for more than a century that the finger-length ratio differs between men and women. Recently, scientists found a connection between finger lengths and the amount of testosterone that a fetus was exposed to in the womb: the shorter the index finger relative to the ring finger, the higher the amount of prenatal testosterone.

The new study found such a fetus is more likely to be a physically aggressive adult, according to Peter Hurd and his graduate student Allison Bailey.

Hurd says he first thought the idea was "a pile of hooey," but he changed his mind when he saw the data, which is published in the March issue of the journal Biological Psychology.

While the study finds a connection, finger ratios only predict behavior a small percentage of the time, the researchers caution. The research was based on surveys and hand measurements of 300 undergrads at the university.

Other studies have shown that culture and upbringing affect tendencies toward violence. Exposure to violent television has also been linked to violent behavior later in life. Hurd says the new study supports other research that suggests biology plays a role.

"More than anything, I think the findings reinforce and underline that a large part of our personalities and our traits are determined while we're still in the womb," Hurd said. The connection was found only with physically aggressive behavior, not with verbal aggression or other forms of hostility.

A 2003 report in Chemical & Engineering News, a weekly newsmagazine published by the American Chemical Society, said "flawed brain chemistry, brain damage, genetic defects, an unhealthy psychological environment" all contribute to violent behavior.

Another study by Hurd, to be published in the journal Personality and Individual Differences, find that men with more feminine finger ratios are more prone to depression.

"Finger lengths explain about 5 percent of the variation in these personality measures, so research like this won't allow you to draw conclusions about specific people. For example, you wouldn't want to screen people for certain jobs based on their finger lengths," Hurd said. "But finger length can you tell you a little bit about where personality comes from, and that's what we are continuing to explore."

Hurd plans to measure the digits of hockey players next.

Mine measured out to almost exactly the same size. My ring finger is about 3", and my index finger looks may a tad under 3". I will say that the only violence I can get into or behind is found in boxing or hockey (horray for hockey coming back!!). I hate physical fights, and I'm absolutely disgusted by domestic violence. Ugh!

they need to do a study on people with their second toe longer than their big toe, thats where the real physiognomy data is...

anyone here have that?

...yes, yes I do. My second toes literally stretch a half inch longer than my big toes.

Where does one get the idea to study finger size as an indication of something? That's a bit bizarre.

Yes I've heard of this theory before...and I'm embarassed to say, Ive made my own observations of it. I peek over at a guys hand and make mental note of their finger length ratio and watch for any signs of agresssion I lost count of how many guys this was true for. Still need a larger sample size to come out with my own study.

And for women...if you're second toe is longer than your big toe that means you're the one who wears the pants in the relationship If your big toe is shorter, you let the guy lead. If they are the same length then there is an equality between the couple.

lol!

I agree, this is a somewhat bizarre theory

My ring finger is about 1/4" shorter than my index finger...ditto for my 2nd toes in relation to my great toes.

Well, if your 2nd toe is longer than your great toe, just make sure those pants fit you.

You know I was just rereading this, and I think the statements are contradictory.

If your second is longer, you wear the pants.

If your big toe is shorter, you let the guy lead.

If your second toe is longer, then [by default] your big toe is shorter, so how does this work? Maybe if your big toe is longer you let the guy lead?

LOL jwhop good point! I guess I'll have to shop for some more pants Having the index finger longer than the ring finger is a sign of pride and leadership...but it doesn't tell how well they lead. I guess that's up to the will of the individual and other charateritics of the hand.

AG thanks for pointing that out I'm not surprised I made that slip, happens to me alot. Well wouldn't want to confuse anybody,...So let me rephrase this:

If the second toe is longer than the big toe, then the woman leads.

Juniperb,

you have a long second toe and I really couldn't tell you what your finger length ratio would be...unless you were a boy/girl

Lol Petron...this is interesting. You should see how long my father's ring finger is! A read somewhere that a long ring or sun finger is also supposed to mean some one who excessively gambles and/or is artistic.

ive already looked at the hands of a bunch of guys i know.......the most violently aggressive among them all have the long ring finger.....it seems quite accurate....

i'll bet your dad enjoys a good fight eh? is he also left handed?

i'm thinking of having my ring fingers surgically extended as a defense in court if i ever need it.....
