jwop, someone sent me this in an email..thought you'd like it....

TO THOSE OF YOU NOT FAMILIAR WITH JOE ARPAIO, HE IS THE MARICOPA, ARIZONA COUNTY SHERIFF AND HE KEEPS GETTING ELECTED OVER AND OVER.

THIS IS ONE OF THE REASONS WHY:

Sheriff Joe Arpaio (in Arizona) who created the "tent city jail":

He has jail meals down to 40 cents a serving and charges the inmates for them.

He stopped smoking and porno magazines in the jails. Took away their weights. Cut off all but "G" movies.

He started chain gangs so the inmates could do free work on county and city projects.

Then he started chain gangs for women so he wouldn't get sued for discrimination.

He took away cable TV until he found out there was a federal court order that required cable TV for jails. So he hooked up the cable TV again but only let in the Disney channel and the weather channel.

When asked why the weather channel he replied, so they will know how hot it's gonna be while they are working on my chain gangs.

He cut off coffee since it has zero nutritional value.

When the inmates complained, he told them, "This isn't the Ritz/Carlton. If you don't like it, don't come back."

He bought Newt Gingrich's lecture series on videotape that he pipes into the jails.

When asked by a reporter if he had any lecture series by a Democrat, he replied that a democratic lecture series might explain why a lot of the inmates were in his jails in the first place.

More on the Arizona Sheriff:

With temperatures being even hotter than usual in Phoenix (116 degrees just set a new record), the Associated Press reports: About 2,000 inmates living in a barbed-wire-surrounded tent encampment at the Maricopa County Jail have been given permission to strip down to their government-issued pink boxer shorts.

On Wednesday, hundreds of men wearing boxers were either curled up on their bunk beds or chatted in the tents, which reached 138 degrees inside the week before.

Many were also swathed in wet, pink towels as sweat collected on their chests and dripped down to their pink socks.

"It feels like we are in a furnace," said James Zanzot, an inmate who has lived in the tents for 1 year. "It's inhumane."

Joe Arpaio, the tough-guy sheriff who created the tent city and long ago started making his prisoners wear pink, and eat bologna sandwiches, is not one bit sympathetic He said Wednesday that he told all of the inmates: "It's 120 degrees in Iraq and our soldiers are living in tents too, and they have to wear full battle gear, but they didn't commit any crimes, so shut your damned mouths!"

Way to go, Sheriff! Maybe if all prisons were like this one there would be a lot less crime and/or repeat offenders. Criminals should be punished for their! crimes - not live in luxury until it's time for their parole, only to go out and commit another crime so they can get back in to live on taxpayers money and enjoy things taxpayers can't afford to have for themselves.

Sheriff Joe was just reelected Sheriff in Maricopa County, Arizona.

Hey SC, you're right, I do love that.

Seems like those convicts are getting some structure in their lives they missed when they were growing up.

Making them listen to Newt's tapes...well, that's obviously a right-wing plot to convert them all to Republicans. After all, a piece in the Miami paper...after the 2000 election showed that 87% of felons...who voted illegally...voted for democrats. So, it's obviously a plot to deprive the democrats of one of their most reliable voting blocks..the felon vote

My-my, making those prisoners wear pink underwear. Hey, where's Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch when those prisoners need them?

Just call that Sheriff "Papa Joe"!

What crimes did they commit ? And do the legislatures who made the laws get to be in the tents when they get caught breaking the rules as well ?

Or are our polliticians and pollicemen just above the common men who get to wear pink when they break a law or two ?

Anyone wonder if thats the kinda treatment Gearge Washington would have gotten if he had lost his first few battles ,and been caught,,, in the eyes of the British King him and all the other founding Fathers where just savage criminals.

And please dont be foolish enough to try and paint me out to be another bleeding heart liberal with an unrealistic view of letting hardend criminals roam free. You should already know me atleast better then that.

I kinda like this guy. Except for the piped in Newt bit. We should be stern with our criminals, but we shouldn't torture them. That's just not right.

No, I doubt George Washington would have wound up in a tent prison wearing pink underwear if the British had captured him.

You might recall..or might not...the British hanged Nathan Hale when they caught him.

The feeling of the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence was that they were risking their lives and Franklin said it best...We must all hang together or we will surely hang separately.

So, what law(s) did the legislatures enact that makes you want to send them to prison.

Well TINK, there are some who would consider forced listening to Newt's tapes to be torture. On the other hand, they might actually learn something.

Yes, Tink, I think if I had to listen to Newt for very long I might commit a crime!!!

Magus, I don't know what crimes they were in prison for, but I imagine they were varied. I don't know what difference that would make. Crime=Punishment.

Perhaps for some crimes it may seem harsh, but I certainly agree that prisoners don't need to be set up in some kind of resort...and cable tv federally mandated??? Give me a break!! Get them some newspapers to read.....teach them to read if need be...but cable tv????? puleeze!!!!

I don't see an issue with any of that.

They (prisoners) have been naughty and now are grounded... When my kids are grounded, there is no TV, computer, Game Cube, friends over, or playing outside. No dessert, no staying up late... They can read, or stare at the wall. That's it.

Why should we be easier on a serious offender than we are on a 9 year old who broke the household rules and needs to suffer consequences?

As in any prison anywhere, I think the crimes commited should be a very importnant question.

If the federal government passed a law next year that outlawed fornication wihtout permit [for what ever reasons that seem logical or for everyones benefit at the time] would you consider it fare to have to be sent to prison if you where caught ?

that was an extreme example that as of now is only seen in a few science fiction movies. But in my opinion and view there are enough laws already existing ,federal and state wide that seem equaly obsene, and insane.

No prisoners should not be entitled to cable tv..In my opinion peaple out side of prison would be better smashing there tvs, or useing them as a night stand or simple decoration.

Give htem stuff to read, sure by all meens. Screw that newspaper that barely makes usefull toilet paper. Give em a hwole used book library,,multible sections..Tehy minas well learn something , or more of somehting while they are idly stuck in there.

FOr the love of creation,,, atleast give them cells that have temperatures somewhere under 105 degrees. Are they being punished for allegid wrongs done to society, or are they part of some sorta 4th ryke consentration camp experiments , with no hope of readmitence into society ?

Perhaps the point that I see little to no real justice in our legal system has an effect on my views toward this. As well as I have no faith in any mortal fairly passing judgment on someone else, especialy beyond cases of the "golden rule" being broken. After all, Im one of the peaple that said ata girl when I heard why Martha Stewart was in court. Sorry , but in a nation where I see the government that was once more "for the peaple ,by the peaple" being nothing but a cold joke and illusion more and more,,,, I dont thinks its the peaple of our society that need policing, I see it as the goverment that is in need of some agresive clean up. All levels, all bureus, all agencys and facets need to be cleared of their corruption and rif raf before any other civilian is put on trial [excluding murders, rapist, theft, eccetra].

I agree that the government needs policing as well, but I'm sorry... child molesters, rapists, murderers, drug dealers, robbers... all of these people need to be put on TIME OUT and have their rights as citizens removed for a time. They made a choice. They NEED to SUFFER consequences. Light consequences won't teach my children the err of their ways... it definitely won't teach a grown a$$ed person.

There should be NO extras in prison. Prison life is supposed to SUCK. They shouldn't have fun... there should be no enjoying themselves.
