KLEINMOND, South Africa (Reuters) - A South African inventor unveiled a new anti-rape female condom on Wednesday that hooks onto an attacker's penis and aims to cut one of the highest rates of sexual assault in the world.

"Nothing has ever been done to help a woman so that she does not get raped and I thought it was high time," Sonette Ehlers, 57, said of the "rapex", a device worn like a tampon that has sparked controversy in a country used to daily reports of violent crime.

Police statistics show more than 50,000 rapes are reported every year, while experts say the real figure could be four times that as they say most rapes of acquaintances or children are never reported.

Ehlers said the "rapex" hooks onto the rapist's skin, allowing the victim time to escape and helping to identify perpetrators.

"He will obviously be too pre-occupied at this stage," she told reporters in Kleinmond, a small holiday village about 100km (60 miles) east of Cape Town. "I promise you he is going to be too sore. He will go straight to hospital."

The device, made of latex and held firm by shafts of sharp barbs, can only be removed from the man through surgery which will alert hospital staff, and ultimately, the police, she said.

It also reduces the chances of a woman falling pregnant or contracting AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases from the attacker by acting in the same way as a female condom.

South Africa has more people with HIV/AIDS than any other country, with one in nine of its 45 million population infected.

Ehlers, who showed off a prototype on Wednesday, said women had tried it for comfort and it had been tested on a plastic male model but not yet on a live man. Production was planned to start next year.

But the "rapex" has raised fears amongst anti-rape activists that it could escalate violence against women.

"If a victim is wearing such a device it may enrage the attacker further and possibly result in more harm being caused," said Sam Waterhouse, advocacy co-ordinator for Rape Crisis.

Other critics say the condom is mediaeval and barbaric -- an accusation Ehlers says should be directed rather at the act of rape.

"This is not about vengeance ... but the deed, that is what I hate," she said.

Yeah, sounds like a very painful deterrant. Could work wonders.

I think that makes the list of the top ten weirdest things I've read all week.

I wonder how the inventor came up with this idea...

Look at the AIDS rate in S. Africa.
Then see if you can find how much of that is attributable to rape, even rape of young girls (as sex with a virgin is reputed to cure HIV/AIDS)...that's how he came up with it.

My first thought was "OMG, what about when the man is engraged because of the device and he kills her?"

Then again, there are many rapes that end in beatings and murder, so the person has to ask the question "DO I take the chance of getting raped and having this device, which could kill me or just take the chance of getting raped?"

BUT.. here is something else... once the attackers are keen to this device will they FORCE the woman to take it out? Or will they just rape her in another way?

I'd like to think this would save women and girls but I worry that the thugs will find a way around it.

No problem, of course. Just thought that bit might be pertinent.

I think one feature of the device is that it can't be removed except in a hospital, and that it's very very painful. So any man who gets one on the end of his thing is going to be, yes, very very angry, but also not capable raping anything.

Rapists deserve that.

Pid (and the guys here, for that matter),

Don't you think the guy would be too incapacitated with pain to care about raping her with something else, or murdering her?

This is a very sensitive organ we're talking about.

Just the idea of knowing its out there has got to be a huge deterrent in and of itself.

Maybe Pid is right tho... maybe it could go down like that. What do I know about having a penis?

Fellas?

Well, I think it may be logical to assume that the rapists (therapists?) might start checking for it before compromising themselves.

I think it would be quite painful. I'm not at all violent enough to know whether or not that would incite violence on the spot or not. I think it might hatch some revenge unless the women are given police protection.

Extremly painfull, evne the most violent person wouldnt be able to do much on the spot.

And I would hope the women would take advantage of him being on the floor, and rearange his face and skull while hes down, then run... And ouwl certainyl hope freinds and fammly of the would have been victim look out for her for a while before the pollice are even needed.

Or they could just bypass vaginal rape period and go for another entry. That is what I was talking about... not going from one to the other with a sore penis.

Also.. lets keep in mind the major exchange of fluids now. HE is going to bleed and he is going to get it on and in her.

It can be removed from the female (without the hospital).

I think it is just a bad idea, but then again, they need something to help those women out.
