now friends take adifferent turn for a second and just think , what do u feel like when u think of india . besides snake charmers or elephants on the road .they are there but that doesn't actually define india . u can go political , if u feel like . infact , i would like u to put the political image too but those having no interest in politics , may choose .i would like to know what is the kind of image that india projects . its not a problem if its politically negative . everyone's invited (seriously at that ) IP: Logged |

I think of it as a big, up-and-coming, messy democracy that's doing an awful lot with its huge, ethnically diverse population and in changing the less productive aspects of some of its old ways of thinking.A little random-word free association: Spiritual Tough Teeming Sickness Conflicted Ancient Kama Sutra Hinduism Buddha Islam Assassination Colonialism Poverty Mother Teresa Gandhi Masscre Protest Technology Don't-Have-Your-Period-And-Go-To-Your-Friend's-Sleepover (Long Story - I went my friend Kajal's house for her birthday sleepover when I was 12 while on my period; I put a tampon wrapper in her bathroom's trashcan and was greeted later by her, wide-eyed and with her Mom, saying, "You didn't go in Grandma's room today, did you...?" - that's where they kept their shrine since she had hit menopause). Short (though, to be fair, that's gotta be all dietary - that same friend was nearly half a foot taller than her Dad by the time she hit puberty) Doctor Professional (It's cliche, but sooo many Indians who come over here become Drs or IT professionals) Hope ~~~ It may seem obvious from what I've written, but I like India. I really do. And I think it's a little funny that it seems that so many people in India don't seem to realize the impact that some of your biggest names have had on the "outside". Like M. Gandhi - I cannot think of a time when I've not known his name. Then when I was in college working at my part-time job at a video store, a guy - I'm guessing just arrived in the US from India - said, "Do you realize that you have a quotation from an Indian on the back of your shirt?" (It was a Peace Studies shirt and the back had a quote that said, "You must be the change you wish to see in the world.") "Yes...Gandhi." "Yes, Gandhi is an Indian!" "...I know..." Ack, baby's awake (but you get the point). IP: Logged |

It's the most mystical of the large countries I think. It does seem like a spiritual place. IP: Logged |

The food is the bomb, the guys are handsome, and the girls are gorgeous. Never been there myself but it must be a nice place based on the people I've met and their contributions. Back at home my grandfather used to dine with an Indian man and his wife. Very hospitable people he says. IP: Logged |

I like sari/saree's too. I only wore one once to my friends wedding. For most weddings and occasions i usually wear shalwar kameez. My mother used to wear them before moving to Canada...it can get too cold to wear them here.

Right across the border in Zambia the Indians have set up a school there and the dress code is a very beautiful sari. I know this from a distant cousin who goes there now and sent us pics via my grandfather. My mother suggests its only fair...since back in the day they had to wear the boring Catholic School girl uniforms when they first came. RG, I was waitressing last night from 5-10.

Dulce Ive known two Zambian families, since I was a kid...actually if you saw the pic of my brother and his boys, the bigger guy on the left is Zambian. They have a Gugrati Indian background and speak Swahili also.IP: Logged |

Really? Kewl! I heard they almost adopted Swahili as the official language there in Zambia but changed their minds....they didn't want to be reminded of the "slavetraders" from centuries past. The irony is that their official lauguage is that of their former oppressors (English). Too bad, I've heard it spoken once and its sounds great. Yeah, there are alot of Indians now in Zambia, some from the colonial times and some for bussiness/trade reasons. I thought it was awesome that they set up a school though.....partly because of the dress code. IP: Logged |

There are lots of Indians here that came from East Africa...and all of the ones I know had business back in Africa. I have an Arab friend who's parents are from Tanzania (I think?) who also speaks Swahili. What a great idea that their school uniform is the sari!! IP: Logged |
