Not a huge slam dunk for Letterman... but it's at O'Reilly's expense, so it's entertaining.

quote:
Letterman to O’Reilly: 60% of what you say is crap
In arguably one of the angriest (and possibly most notable) moments of David Letterman’s television career — during a heated exchange with guest Bill O’Reilly on Tuesday’s Late Show — Letterman let rip on the Iraq War:

Letterman: “Yeah, so why are we there in the first place? I agree to you, with you that we have to support the troops. They are there, they are the best and the brightest of this country. [audience applause] There’s no doubt about that. And I also agree that now we’re in it it’s going to take a long, long time. People who expect it’s going to be solved and wrapped up in a couple of years, unrealistic, it’s not going to happen. However, however, that does not eliminate the legitimate speculation and concern and questioning of ‘Why the Hell are we there to begin with?’”

O’Reilly: “If you want to question that, and then revamp an intelligence agency that’s obviously flawed, the CIA, okay. But remember, MI-6 in Britain said the same thing. Putin’s people in Russia said the same thing, and so did Mubarak’s intelligence agency in Egypt.”

Letterman: “Well then that makes it all right?”

O’Reilly: “No it doesn't make it right.”

Letterman: “That intelligence agencies across the board makes it alright that we’re there?”

O’Reilly: “It doesn't make it right.”

The words continued to fly between the two with O’Reilly visibly unnerved by his host’s candor, flaying the rationale for the Iraq invasion. Moments later, Letterman delivered this verbal smackdown to O’Reilly:

Letterman: “I’m not smart enough to debate you point to point on this, but I have the feeling, I have the feeling about 60 percent of what you say is crap. [audience laughter] But I don’t know that for a fact. [more audience applause]

Paul Shafer: “60 percent.”

Letterman: “60 percent. I’m just spit-balling here.”

What I found interesting about their little banter is that O'Reilly said something to the effect of "I won't call anyone who blows up women and babies a Freedom Fighter on my program."

That struck me as quite hypocritical ( big surprise considering its source) because there have been plenty of civilian fatalities in Iraq... not to mention Afghanistan.

Using Bill O'Reilly's logic, we should no longer refer to American soldiers as Freedom Fighters.

Using Bill O'Reilly's logic, the only group of people we should call Freedom Fighters are the group of people that wanted this war over before it started. THEY are the only group of people without innocent blood on their hands.

Thank you for that, Ms. SPARKLING LIBRA!

O'Reilly needs someone to take him down a notch or two!

Way to go, Letterman!

You're such a b*llsh*t artist, jwhop.

So, everyone who would deign to question the validity of the reasoning of the initial push towards war in Iraq is a leftist?

My Grandfather gave most of his adult life to his country - he was a highschool biology teacher at the start WWII but joined the Army at the behest of some friends. He served honorably and with distinction until his retirement from active service as a COL. He was going to be promoted to a General but opted out for the sake of his family. He was then appointed by special Congressional mandate as a Deputy Ass't Secretary of the Army in charge of Logistics (special action being required because until that point that position had been held by a General - his name was Gerald B. Russell - look it up).

During Vietnam, he was nearly run out of Washington on several occasions because he refused to yield to what he saw to be flawed strategy (the ol' "take that hill, now retreat" approach that seemed to be favored by the grand strategists in DC, so far removed from the ground reality of the troops) - this despite the extraordinary measures that were taken to get him into office.
He courageouly refused to be a croney and a yes-man and spoke his mind whenever he deemed it necessary.

He was a hard-nosed, tough-as-nails ball-breaker and a fierce and loyal proponent of the interests of his country - not some "pamby, whining leftist" as you may say - and before his death he was adamantly opposed to both reasoning behind the fiasco in Iraq and most of the bubble-think that he saw going on with this Administration.

Please keep your backwards-arse judgements about the positions and motivations of men to your self

It's a statement O'Reilly made awhile back about Letterman...saying...Letterman was a great one for spotting phonies...(or something like that)....ironic, huh?

Just found this interesting little quote from Mr O'Reilly...

"I said on my program, if, if the Americans go in and overthrow Saddam Hussein and it's clean, he has nothing, I will apologize to the nation, and I will not trust the Bush administration again."
- Bill O'Reilley, on ABC's Good Morning America, 03-18-03

The above is from MediaChannel. they have some new service where you can search for news clips on everything. This conversation between Dave and Bill was one of the examples.
