Well, the President vetoed the embryonic stem cell legislation out of the belief no life should be taken to benefit others.

There is also the fact many fly by night operators were standing in line for a federal government handout.

If the research is so promising, then real research labs will find the resources to fund their research...including major research labs.

I notice Arnold didn't spend his own money but rather the money of California taxpayers.

Arnold is either playing a political card or he has a genuine desire to help those who have little hope. I don't know which.

I really don't know where I stand on this issue...embyronic stem cells vs adult stem cells. It's a politically, religiously and emotionally charged issue.

That's right Lotus, we are not God. I do recall a passage from the old testament saying...nothing the mind of man can conceive is beyond him....paraphrasing.

I think some of the Kennedy is rubbing off.

As I see it the embryo is only one half of what could become a human life (after fertilization) but untill then there is no heartbeat so to speak so why not use that half (embryonic stem cell) to fix an already damaged whole. There is no loss of life here.

This could improve the quality of life for so many people starting with diseases like diabetes and so on.

(from the above link)
"Embryonic stem cells are building blocks that turn into different types of tissue. Scientists hope to use them someday to regenerate damaged organs or other body parts and cure diseases. Some oppose such research because it entails the destruction of human embryos."

Lalalinda....I am diabetic...and wouldn't it have been wonderful to have saved Linda's life...

I'm glad Arnold went ahead with this...

Perhaps one day (when we can get it off the ground)....this will save a lot of lives...

I already was very unhappy with bush but this veto just proves to me that he's even a worse schmuk than I thought he was....Actually....I'm not surprised by his actions....*sigh*

Arnold's not the only one

(from the above link)
Elsewhere, Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, a Democrat, announced Thursday that he is diverting $5 million from the state budget for stem cell research, despite repeated objections from state legislators.

"Investing in research that can save lives and prevent serious illnesses is more than a sound public health strategy, it's our moral obligation," he said.

The money will come out of administrative funds already set aside for the state Department of Healthcare and Family Services, Blagojevich said.

On the other hand, there is no law preventing the private sector..businesses, labs, medical research companies from pursuing embryonic stem cell research. The policy prevents the federal government from funding that kind of research.

I'm not a Kennedy fan

Ah....but Arnie is....he and Maria have been together quite awhile now...(another blending of the parties of which I don't believe there are two, anyway...)

Lalalinda....it's encouraging to know that the research continues, in spite of those who would try and stop it.

Bush isn't trying to stop embryonic stem cell research Rainbow.

What is it you don't understand about the private sector being perfectly free to spend their own money for research? Since when is the federal government under any obligation to spend money for private research in any field?

When you find that in the US Constitution, post it right here Rainbow.

The National Institute of Health is a running sore which produces nothing of benefit for the American people. The NIH is the government medical research program which soaks up billions and produces nothing. Cures for disease comes from private enterprise, not from government researchers. The NIH is more like government welfare for 2nd and 3rd rate researchers.
