July 16, 2006 Mine detection vehicle attacked with IED On Saturday, Jaish al-Mujahedeen, an Iraqi insurgency group, posted a video on a website frequented by insurgents that shows an attack on a vehicle in Iraq with an improvised explosive device (IED). The targeted vehicle appears to be a Meerkat mine detection vehicle, which looks like an oversized, armored dune buggy. The Meerkat, manufactured in South Africa, carries a mine detection array with both metal detection and ground penetrating radar. It also features a V-shaped undercarriage that directs any blast away from the vehicle, protecting the driver. The Meerkat is designed to withstand an anti-tank mine blast, or 15 pounds of TNT. It is not known if any casualties resulted from this attack. Download 'ied_on_mine_detection_vehicle.wmv
