http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/opinion/280499_youngs09.html "Since that time, the U.N. not only has failed to keep its promise, its forces stood by and watched as the area was reinforced with impenetrable bunkers, stockpiled with weapons and civilian residences were used to squirrel away weapons launchers. All that happened while U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan silently stood watching; it has been on his watch that Hezbollah initiated this most recent round of civilian bloodshed in the Middle East.
While Annan usually is vocal about nations that contravene U.N. dictates, his silence as Hezbollah prepared to attack Israel is no surprise. Annan consistently has maintained an anti-Israel agenda. However, Annan's position requires that he set aside his prejudices and carry out the commitments of the U.N. In that, he has failed miserably and, as a result, so has the U.N.
The failure should not be surprising. As structured, the U.N. constitutionally is unable to carry out its mission. Organization management 101 teaches us that for an organization to be effective, at some level its members must have shared values and goals. The U.N. is made up of 192 nation states representing greatly disparate values and goals. Even so, Annan and U.N. supporters continue to affirm their commitment to multilateralism. This ideology stands for the proposition that the approval of others makes actions right or moral, and that consensus itself is a virtue. The natural result of that ideology is that "right" is determined by the lowest common denominator. That is nonsense. Don't we teach our children that sometimes they must take the unpopular stand simply because it is right? After all, there is no purer consensus than that of a lynch mob."
Wasn't the world supposed to be depending on the U.N. for middle east peace (treaty)?
