Obama considers presidential run
POSTED: 9:04 p.m. EDT, October 22, 2006

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Sen. Barack Obama said Sunday that he may run for president in 2008, despite previous assertions that he would complete his current six-year senatorial term, which ends in 2011.

"I would say I am still at the point where I have not made a decision to pursue higher office, but it is true that I have thought about it over the last several months," the 45-year-old Democratic senator from Illinois told NBC's "Meet the Press."

In January, Obama told NBC that he would not run for president or vice president in 2008.

Asked Sunday about his earlier stance, Obama said, "That was how I was thinking at that time."

"I don't want to be coy about this, given the responses that I've been getting over the last several months," he said. "I have thought about the possibility, but I have not thought about it with the seriousness and depth that I think is required."

Obama has given a slew of interviews in recent weeks to television shows, magazines and other publications to promote his new book, "The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream." The book, published last week, touches on themes of race and identity. (Watch Obama talk about his plans on Larry King Live -- 11:37 )

He wove many of the same topics into his 2004 Democratic convention speech. The speech, and his election to the Senate that same year, helped propel the attorney and father of two to an overnight political sensation in Democratic circles.

"He is so appealing because he has escaped some of the normal, you know, bad stuff that happens to people on the campaign trail," Lynne Sweet, a columnist for the Chicago Sun-Times, said Sunday on CNN's "Reliable Sources."

"And here's the realization I think his people and Sen. Obama is coming to, and it's this: you can't time timing."

Other columnists have hailed Obama as the solution to the Democratic Party's woes in winning elections.

"The next Democratic nominee should either be Barack Obama or should have the stature that would come from defeating Barack Obama," David Brooks, a conservative op-ed columnist for The New York Times, wrote in his Thursday column, entitled, "Run, Barack, Run."

Frank Rich, a liberal op-ed columnist for the same newspaper, wrote in his Sunday piece that much of the Democrats' long-term success will depend on whether "Obama steps up and changes the party before the party of terminal timidity and equivocation changes him."

Political analysts have also speculated that another Democrat, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, is gearing up for a presidential bid in 2008. In a Sunday debate with Republican challenger John Spencer, the junior senator from New York wouldn't say definitively if she would complete her six-year term if re-elected.

Spencer accused her of using New Yorkers' time to run for president. Clinton would make a "tremendous candidate for the president of the United States but not at the expense of New Yorkers," he said. (Full story)

This month, former Virginia Gov. Mark Warner, a man many saw as another possible Democratic presidential contender, ruled out a 2008 bid.

Any thoughts?

I actually happen to be physically compatible with his data, which isn't surprising since i'm saturn/5th/capricorncusp and my natal stars are connected mostly to my Saturn and Venus.

LOL Petron.

I have heard the guy talk and I have read a lot of the things he has written.

I like him very much and like what he has to say. He has my vote.

A vote for Hillary Clinton will maintain the status quo. She is just another corporate owned politician. She is in favor of the Iraq war. Nuff said.

But we have to get by Tuesday's elections first. The Bush administration, given two more years of free reign under a Republican majority Senate and House, there won't be any elections in 2008 as the dictatorship will be firmly established.

I would like someone like him to win as presidency but its not gonna happen. America isnt ready for a woman or black president and even if it did happen, some a-hole would probably assassinate them.

Tink, they said the same thing about JFK. They said he was too young and that he did not have the experience needed.

What experience did G W Bush have to become president? He was the governor of Texas is all and his dad was the president. But he himself had no prior experience in Wash. D.C. At least Obama Barrack has experience as a senator.

I like that Cancer in Venus aspect in Barrack's chart, DD.

We are really going to need a president with the ability to create unity after 8 years of the Bush regime and all the division and disunity he has created in this country and the world.

Mirandee ~ so your saying that in JFK's case fears that he was inexperienced were unfounded, but in Bush's case they are valid? Ok, fair enough. Typical, but fair.

I like Obama. I still feel he needs a few more walks around the block. Further, JFK would have down better with a few more of those walks but all the walks in the world wouldn't help Bush Jr. Character is there or it is not. Experience teaches nothing to the unwise.

and is very correct, lets congragulate those comments, because its very true. Not with the history of America will an African-American male be "allowed" to succeed in the highest position of politics, especially not with history tidbits like the KKK, even if there are just hundreds or less of those American Terrorists around, i'm sure that racist whites would jump on the band wagon at the drop of a dime (join the KKK) if they even suspected that there country would be ran by a black, and there are tons of racist whites out there. Besides who would promote the idea of An African-American First Lady, for centuries the first lady has always been a mirror image of The American Girl, and i'm sorry guys, but for centuries, the American Girl has been of white skin and blond hair, blue eyes, or "brunette". Just keepin' it real.

right, "and"?

It doesn't matter whether racist whites are ready or not, or if he'll be assassinated, hes still going to get elected.

Moreover, the republicans are presenting no good canditates so for. Who's going to oppose him, McCain?

I believe we'll see a male African-American President before a female President of any color. He'll be light skinned like Obama, of course, but I don't think we'll need to wait long. Rascism is a problem, no doubt, but the younger generations aren't nearly as infected as the older and it will slowly die off.

It's not going to die off. It will only get worse. Heres proof. For example, our current President Bush has exemplified his racist tendencies when the worst natural disaster struck the United States of America last year with Hurricane Katrina. Enough Said. Rapper Kanye West brings these notions to light when he states on television "george bush don't care about black people", before the newsstation cut him off repeatedly. And I was watching a Ku Klux Klan Documentary on the History Channel, and they state "We hate blacks, jews, & catholics just for breathing" (they said it in more derogatory language) but you can surely imagine. Let's just accept the facts. And just like "and" and I have stated earlier, it's not possible of happening, considering the history of slavery & torture in America, until Pluto is in Aquarius.

what does Bush's racism prove? his racism is of a particular sort, namely that of the privalged class. racism, like race itself, is a hopeless cause. mankind evolves. sometimes three steps forward and two steps back but evolve it will.

I agree with the first two posts by TINK. I do think we'll see an African American president before a woman but I don't see it happening during the 2008 election. I don't see a minority, Hispanic or otherwise, becoming the President for at least a decade or more. It's sad but true.

Neptune,

You will also have to add a few others to your list of those that let down Katrina Victims- namely the Governor of LA as well as the mayor of NO. Mr. Kayne West is racist towards whites in general. I doubt I would be touting his music.

Now... I'd love to see Lt. Governor Michael Steele win the Senate and then move onto the White House at some point. He is one sharp Pubbie
