Guess i shouldnt mention Honor Killings to you Sweet Stars....its the most depressing thing in my opinion as is Female Genital Mutilation. These women sometimes get murdered without any trial in amazingly brutal ways for the protection of supposed family honor (has nothing to do with religion but tribal practices). They are stoned, shot, drowned sometimes for mere though of infidelities, sometimes for running away with the man they want to marry and defying their father's orders. Then there is Female Genital Mutilation that the UN is trying profusely to stop. Its often done in unsanitary conditions that leads to much physical and psychological damage.

Couldn't agree with you more, BUD. Don't those sects of Islam that practice female circumcision do it mainly to curb female sexuality, though?? Check out this quote: quote: "It has been urged as an argument against the universal adoption of circumcision that the removal of the protective covering of the glans tends to dull the sensitivity of that exquisitely sensitive structure and thereby diminishes sexual appetite and the pleasurable effects of coitus. Granted that this be true, my answer is that, whatever may have been the case in days gone by, sensuality in our time needs neither whip nor spur, but would be all the better for a little more judicious use of curb and bearing-rein."
--E. Harding Freeland, Circumcision, The Lancet, vol. 2 (29 Dec.1900): pp.1869-1871. Oh, wait. That's male circumcision, which was introduced to the US in an effort to curb masturbation, that they're talking about. My mistake. Both, however, need to be recognized as the abhorrent human-rights violations that they are, and abolished.
Savage ignorance exists even on our doorstep. http://www.mothersagainstcirc.org/fleiss.html IP: Logged |

Yes Johnny they do it to curb female sexuality but despite using Islam as an exuse, its an old tribal custom in the Middle East and much of Africa. Islam actually forbids it and says that its wrong, but there is one sunnah in the Qu'ran which is a bit vague where Muhammed (pbuh) says "You shouldnt do it but if you do, dont do too much" and these tribes assume its him saying they should...Certain places its most widespread i believe Somalia, and the worst one is Pharaonic circumcision where they cut everything off, take out the female genetalia pretty much and sew it back together so that it is torn on the wedding night (obviously with much pain and gore) and has to be resawn after every childbirth. In some parts of Africa they belive that if a man comes in contact with the female clitoris they will die or the baby will die at birth and those are the reasons for doing so. Pretty much old tribal customs. Islam couldnt curb it so they reformed it to fit their needs. Here is a good site: http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs241/en/ I do much research into the subject. Its really depressing IP: Logged |

Sweet Stars, i love your threads, plus the fact that your very insightful, but quote: This world is a piece of **** .
I agree with you, but what are you going to do to change that, have you gave it any thought, or was that just one of those statements that just 'sit' and have no definition. When you really hate something, and its really a burden, your inclined to fix it. But with the world the way it is, it mostly just can't be.

I went to school in Lahore for a couple of years. It was some of the best of times and worst of times (at the risk of sounding cliched), Lahore is dynamite place from what Ive seen much prefer it to Karachi less violence too and better shopping. But if you will go also go to Pak controlled Kashmir (Muzaffarabad, used to be really beautiful but collapsed in the earthquake, but still the Northern Kashmir is breathtaking). Indian Kashmir is really beautiful as well , Jammu, is gorgeous. If you ever get the chance DO go! People always say places like Kashmir or Israel / Palestine are not worth going to coz theres too much violence, well if those places werent as beautiful as they are (both of them) why would no one be willing to leave them and move somewhere else (which results in wars)? Part of the reason for the chaos is the surreal beauty. IP: Logged |

Actually the irony of it all Kashmir is considered one of the most desirable vacation places for Israeli tourists, they always feel the people are super hospitable and treat them really well and all is beautiful. And they best of all know the violence themselves so arent paranoid like everyone else. I was surprised when I found that out but I think its really cool. My friend went to Northern Pakistan over the summer and took so many gorgeous scenery pictures its breathtaking, but yes one of the villages was gone in an earthqake. It was very sad. He did bring me some rather cool stuff Fascinating places Id love to go. IP: Logged |

Im leaving on a direct flight to Pakistan on the 7th. First stopping off at Karachi for about 2 weeks and then Lahore for another 2...maybe i'll see Islamabad and Kashmir from there??Ive only ever been when I was 5. Cant remember much except I think a motorcycle ride (maybe I was dreaming ), making tiny rotis with my grandmother for a colourful parrot, my grandmother's carrot halwa, and shopping on the streets. What Im most looking forward to is meeting relatives ive never met before and dont even know about...learning some culture, the language and history...and where my parents came from. And the shopping What Im not looking forward to is the corruption, con artists and fake people...and poverty. Maybe this experience will make me see Pakistanis in a better light. Im not too keen on the Pakistani communities in North America...the Pakistanis in Hamilton where I went to school were too cliquey, in Mississaga they're superficial. And just got back from California and they must top the cake in terms superficiality. Pakistani girls especially are annoying because most Ive encounted are stuck up, catty and fake. IP: Logged |

Oh yes same here...especially the clique-iness. My HS had like 3 different warring groups and what esle did they fight over but guys...it was very common to see a guy dump his gf for her best friend and then the cat fights would begin. Annoyed me royally IP: Logged |

Yep it's a sweet...and there are many types of halwa. I like the sesame seed version but Pakistanis dont make that one...we can buy it from the store here.Carrot halwa is basically made from grated carrots, sugar and milk/cream. Have you tried any halwa before? Hehe, sorry about the rant...not all Pakistanis are like this. It sucks that theres such a small group of them here tho most I dont get along with. Oh I stayed away from highschool drama...i found most of my classmates were immature and was very selective of the friends I had. IP: Logged |

Oh most certainly a good friend of mine of 6 years is Pakistani (and an Aries Gemini ) and this girl im pretty close with (Aquarius Cancer). But yea like you said its the cliques. quote: Oh I stayed away from highschool drama...i found most of my classmates were immature and was very selective of the friends I had.
Lucky for me I went to the best school in NYC (its public but u can only get in with an exam) so the people there were relatively smart and the drama was on the low. Gosh oh Gosh how much drama there is in my college...ughhhhh makes meeeee siiiiccckkk! (most of it is responsible for my "racism" thread lol)
