Hotel heiress Paris Hilton was released from prison yesterday for medical reasons after serving just over three days of a 23-day sentence.

But she will be confined to her home for 40 days, officials said.

Steve Whitmore of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's office said Hilton had been "reassigned" but he declined to identify her medical condition for privacy reasons.

"With extensive consultation with medical personnel it was decided this reassignment should be done," Whitmore said at a news conference.

Hilton, a symbol of privilege and American celebrity culture, was serving a sentence for violating probation after being caught driving with a suspended licence. She will have to wear an electronic monitoring device on her ankle to ensure she does not go out for the next 40 days.

One reporter described Hilton's job as going to parties and events and asked if she would be allowed to leave her home for work, just as lifestyle media star Martha Stewart could during her five months under house arrest for insider trading.

"My understanding is that she's confined to her home with an ankle bracelet, she cannot leave that facility," said Whitmore. "She will fulfill the remainder of her time confined to her home."

The 26-year-old hotel Hilton Hotel heiress and star of reality television show "The Simple Life" was originally sentenced to 45 days in prison. That was later reduced to 23 days under state sentencing guidelines.

Hilton was arrested on charges of drunken driving in September. In January, she pleaded no contest - the equivalent of a guilty plea - to a reduced charge of alcohol-related reckless driving. She was sentenced to three years' probation and had her licence suspended.

But she was caught driving on a suspended licence in February, when police stopped her for speeding and with her headlights off at night. A traffic court judge ruled on May 4 that Hilton's latest offence constituted a probation violation.

Hilton turned herself in late on Sunday night, just hours after attending the MTV Movie Awards near Hollywood, where she was the butt of comedians' jokes.

She was released in the early hours of Thursday (Los Angeles time) and Whitmore said she would be credited with five days incarceration, including Sunday and Thursday, even though she actually only spent three full days in prison.

Before she entered prison, a contrite Hilton, whose great-grandfather, Conrad, started the global Hilton Hotel empire, was photographed carrying a Bible.

"This is an important point in my life and I need to take responsibility for my actions. In the future, I plan on taking more of an active role in the decisions I make ... Although I am scared, I am ready to begin my jail sentence," she said.

She was housed in a unit for celebrities and high-profile inmates at a prison in Lynwood, about 24 kilometres from Los Angeles.

Hecht said Hilton was kept alone in her cell, an enclosure 2.4 metres wide, 3.7 metres deep and 2.4 metres high, equipped with two bunks, a sink, a small table, a slit window and a metal toilet.

Hilton's booking photo showed her dressed in a white V-neck top, wearing eye makeup and lip gloss with a slight smile, her blond hair swept to one side over her right shoulder.

A snapshot of the socialite's life:
Paris Whitney Hilton, whose great-grandfather, Conrad, started the global Hilton Hotel empire, was born in New York on Feb. 17, 1981. She gained international fame in 2003 when a home video - made when she was 19 - of her having sex with a boyfriend was posted on Internet.

Hilton used the publicity, coupled with a popular reality television show called "The Simple Life," to build a multimillion-dollar celebrity juggernaut. The show debuted in December 2003 and featured Hilton and Nicole Richie, daughter of singer Lionel Richie. Hilton has published a 178-page book, "Confessions of an Heiress," in 2004.

Hilton has also been an increasing presence on-screen in TV commercials, and in the movies, including "Zoolander" (2001), "Wonderland" (2003).

She had a more substantial role in the horror film "House of Wax" (2005). Hilton, charged in September 2006 with drunken driving, was caught in February driving with a suspended license. A judge sentenced her in May to 45 days in jail, later cut to 23 days.

Its ridiculous. And whats most irritating is that her actions have shown her deliberate refusal to build her character around a sense of reality on a human level. She has no self-worth, because if she did she would be in pursuit of sentimentality, instead of instant gratification.

It devestates me that when people get, or in her case, already are rich, they don't acquire the values needed to accomplish things by their own efforts. Okay, i undertstand, if your beautiful, use it to your advantage and manipulate people, but don't take the easy way out.

my opinion, i think paris is one of the most uneducated, unsophisticated person on earth. She displays no knowledge of general concepts of life, art, & people. It's definitely a rich girl tragedy, and dissapointingly said, it happens much too often around the globe.

This story makes me puke. Everyone knows damn well that woman deserved to be in jail. She even knew it.

To think that she is above the law bewilders me when there are people who are beyond poverty, underrepresented, and discriminated against because of the skin and conditions they were born into being thrown into PRISON for their entire lives or serving DEATH PENALTIES for crimes that they either didn't commit or that don't match the "time" in anyway (robbing a liquor store without harming anyone). But just because their either don't have the money or "the look of innocence", they are judged unfairly and aren't given a chance!

What is she telling young women?! That if you're lucky enough to be born attractive nibbling on a silver spoon that you can just surpass the foundations of society? SITTING ON THE SHOULDERS OF HONEST, HARD WORKING, GOD FEARING everyday citizens! No wonder there are so many brats, and spoiled, inconsiderate people growing up in my generation. People with this much influence should be working to feed our youth the RIGHT morals and RIGHT images...not this sentimentalist garbage.

I was watching the today show. And a defense attorney for Paris' main argument was that the prosecutor was just "jealous" of her, that's all. That "America" is jealous of her and wants to see her in jail.

Last time I checked, jail didn't have seat cushions and a hot tub. FOR CHRIST SAKES SHE WASN'T EVEN IN A REAL JAIL!! House arrest my ass, I bet she has like a bowling alley and night club and spa and all kinds of amusement parks in her house. She doesn't give two flaming craps about anyone or anything but herself.

Sure let's put the broad (she's lost her status as a woman in my mind) back on the road with a bottle of Grey Goose taped to one hand and cocaine on her steering wheel. Then who's going to be crying to who when she kills or severely injures some innocent person!

What is happening to this world? I don't blame the lord if he wants to strike us all down because clearly there are enough idiots who are welcoming it with open arms...

Simply outrageous.

lucky enough to be born attractive

I think that's a debateable point in her case...she looks well worn.

It is absolutely frustrating goatgirl. Paris is a tool and doesn't deserve special treatment. These celebrities constantly get off due to their fame. Blech!!

Attractive doesnt always have to mean physically. As much as many of us despise her, many are drawn to her. She attracts attention, she catches the eye of people. Beautiful or not. Love her or hate her, many of us can't help but listen to the ridiculous stories that are her life. I included. (In my opinion, she looks too plastic.)

The point is here, at least for me, who would Paris Hilton be if she hadn't been born into a wealthy family? Would anyone really care about what she did or said? I think not. Would she be able to get out of her sentence? No. Would she be spending 45 days in a posh country club "prison". No chance in hades. What if she was a minority? She'd be spending a few more than 45 days there I guarantee you that.

Is she attractive? Not to me, and I don't think she is attractive inside either. I think she's a sad, lonely, sorry person, who really wants some attention from anyone in order to make herself feel better inside.

What could she be doing with her wealth, and position that would be meaningful for many people and be making a difference for the positive? A great deal.

It's a shame.

Yea. It's an even sadder story if you look at the larger picture. Our poor poor corrupted society.

Apparently, money buys justice.

i really agree with you guys, i was watching the news and it stated that while at trial, she cried for her mother. Someone also said that 'paris inherited her mothers arrogance'. I can see that. But sometimes it just seems like, its just not that way, all i'm saying is they have a way of trying to make you think what they want you to think.

I suppose that in the grander scheme of things maybe some good will come of this and all the other trials she encounters (It's a possibility. You never know.). Maybe her soul will redeem itself somehow.

I don't really think about her much, and when I do it's generally to think about how utterly ridiculous her life and friends are.

I agree with what everyone has said. When i heard that she was going to locked away...in her MANSION i couldn't beleive it. A couple months in jail is just what she needs!

Even if she has psych problems or medical problems-whatever it was- Im sure 99% of ALL the people in jail have psych problems! WHy does she get special care above everyone else??? Thats when it comes back to society and what society values etc. Really makes me angry.

This was the perfect opportunity for paris and the justice system to set a good example to the world. But they've blown it.

Paris Hilton has the power to do so much good in the world, its really sad that she doesn't use it to do good in the world. MAybe if she HAD gone to jail she would have thought about these things/ She has the opportunity to do so much-If only she could see!!

The update on this one is that Paris Hilton was put back in jail at the order of the judge who also was very upset at the Sheriff who let her out of jail.

The judge who presided over the case and sentenced Paris Hilton ordered her back to jail to serve out the rest of her time. He has also stated that he may charge the Sheriff who released Hilton without informing him of the release and his reasons for releasing her with contempt of court. While the Sheriff cited Hilton's health as the reason the judge stated that he did not receive any information regarding her health issues that offered him any proof of ill health.

I don't know if he did charge the Sheriff or not as I haven't followed up on it. Just happy that the judge was one who actually does believe in equal justice for all.

The only lesson that Paris Hilton may have learned from all of this is that the next time she should raise the bar and use her body or her money to bribe a judge and not a sheriff.

And yes, that is just an assumption on my part as to how she got out of jail.
