I, for one, am starting to look at the Independent ticket for 2008. That might mean that if not enough folks vote for an Independent candidate the Republicans will win the presidential election again. So be it. The Democrats would deserve it for promising to hold Bush accountable and for promises of change which they have not followed through on.

Truth is that the Democrats are salivating over all the power that Bush has amassed while in office and they want that power for themselves - not change at all. Democrats and Republicans. It's the same coin with different faces.

The petition is stated as such:

Senator Reid and Speaker Pelosi,

You crossed the line and played right into the hands of President Bush and rewarded his lawless behavior last week when you allowed the FISA bills to go through Congress, giving the President and his administration more power to invade our privacy and ignore our Constitutional rights.

We demand that you make immediate fixes to FISA. Furthermore, we want to see Congress work to restore our Constitution, not destroy it, including:

End rampant surveillance and warrantless spying on Americans.

Restore habeas corpus and due process.

Shut down Guantánamo Bay and give those held there access to justice.

Stop torture and extraordinary rendition: secretly kidnapping people and sending them to countries that torture.

I will not tolerate your continued failure to hold the executive branch in check.

TELL CONGRESS: DON'T FAIL FREEDOM
Last weekend, a timid Congress caved in to President Bush and his demand for more out-of-control authority to spy on Americans. Instead of reining in a lawless and power-hungry Administration, it handed Bush, Cheney and Gonzales more power to invade our privacy and ignore our Constitutional rights.

Leaders in Congress must hear that we will not tolerate their continued abandonment of their responsibility to hold the Executive Branch in check. Stand with the ACLU and demand that Congress live up to its promise to protect and defend the Constitution, starting with immediate fixes to the outrageous FISA legislation that made warrantless NSA spying on Americans legal.
