Five Cuban Soccer Players Defect in Florida, Miami Herald Says

By Dan Hart March 13 (Bloomberg) --

Five players from the Cuban under- 23 national soccer team defected after playing a match against the U.S. in Tampa, Florida, this week, and plan to seek asylum soon, the Miami Herald reported.

Goalkeeper Jose Manuel Miranda, defender Erlys Garcia Baro, midfielder Yordany Alvarez, defender Loanni Prieto and team captain Yenier Bermudez slipped out of their Tampa hotel on March 11, after planning before the Olympic qualifying tournament to leave, the newspaper said.

The young men plan seek political asylum soon, and then try to win spots with a Major League Soccer or United States Soccer League team, the newspaper said.

Cuban officials met last night with officials of the regional soccer federation to decide whether the island nation will continue in the tournament with a 13-player roster after the defections, the Herald said.

Many years ago I met a Polish hockey player in a bar. He had defected to live in Belgium.

He invited me back to have a party with his team. I thought it was a great idea, but I was with my brother at the time and he didn't agree, the killjoy.

Apparently, so was living in Eastern Europe under the Communist regime.

That's not a political comment, it's paraphrasing from what people in the Czech Republic told me ~ think I went in around 1990. Or 91.

Yeah, well sadly, Eastern Europe can thank Franklin Roosevelt for bargaining away their freedom to Stalin at the Yalta conference in 1945. This, over the protests of Winston Churchill.

Bush has since apologized for the betrayal of Easten Europe by Roosevelt to the screeching and shrieking of leftists everywhere. How dare he.

Roosevelt, who served three-and-a-half terms, and still managed an ending approval rating above Reagan's (twice, or nearly twice what Bush's approval ratings are now)?

Well acoustic, I can see how a big leftie like you would drool over the prospect of selling out...betraying several hundred millions of people to a communist police state....by a big time leftist progressive fascist socialist like Roosevelt.

His approval ratings had and have nothing to do with the issue. Most people were not aware of the deal Roosevelt cut with the murderous communist tyrant Stalin.

Eleanore Roosevelt had it exactly right...when she said..."some of our best friends are communists". Many of those best friends were in the White House staff of the Roosevelt administration.

Tell me acoustic; wouldn't you really like to see those Cuban defectors rounded up and sent back to the Communist workers paradise of Cuba?

Just so you know acoustic, the Bush job approval rating is roughly twice that of the leftist, so called, progressive demoscat Congress.

I would think there's a good chance they will be sent back to Cuba.

Just so you know Clinton left office with a 66% approval rating, which, like Roosevelt's, is also double Bush's current ratings. Defending Bush at this point with his 30-something approval rating is rather moot.

We've already discussed at length the reason for Congress's ratings, which have very little to do with the majority party's job, and everything to do with the percentage make-up of Congress (49% of which is Republican in the Senate, and 46% of which is Republican in the House). Hardly what I would characterize as, "leftist, so called, progressive." What a ridiculous statement (unless of course you're just ceding all the Republicans as Progressive Leftists)!

Republican Eisenhower also had to work with Stalin while leading the Allies.

Hey, maybe they're not really defecting. Cuba is such a marvelous place, after all. It's impossible to imagine people wanting to leave even though so many have done so and continue to do so. It must be something wrong with the people, right?

Yeah Eleanore, who could imagine defection from the Communist workers paradise? Wages of 30-40 cents a day and free healthcare.

I guess those defectors just didn't know how good they had it in Cuba.

You wanna bet on whether those Cuban defectors are rounded up and returned to the Communist workers paradise of Cuba acoustic?
