David Begnaud SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ¯ Racial slurs and insults were spray painted onto a Sacramento homeowner's fence, which had Barack Obama's name in support of the senator's presidential campaign, but the owner says she will leave the vandalized fence as it is to serve as an example of racism and prejudice.

Matt Martinez and his partner painted the pro-Obama signs on their fence two weeks ago, and it remained untouched until Monday night. Apparent white supremacist slogans and racial slurs now surround the original painting, turning heads and shocking commuters Tuesday morning.

Racism is no stranger here in Sacramento,California

Republican Campaign Signs Torched
Posted: 3:20 PM Oct 12, 2008
Last Updated: 7:44 PM Oct 12, 2008

Albemarle County Police are trying to figure out who is responsible for setting fire to a couple campaign signs.

The incident happened early Saturday morning in Earlysville. A McCain-Palin sign and a Virgil Goode sign were set on fire.

"This is a disturbing turn of events and I'm dismayed at the intolerance and attempted intimidation," said Chairman of the Albemarle County Republican Committee, Christian Schoenewald.

Both signs were 4' X 8' that had been posted on someone's private property.

"I'm concerned that this new behavior shows an escalation in the desire to intimidate Republican voters. Theft and defacing of signs is one thing. Burning signs elevates the situation to a whole new level," said Schoenewald.

Last month, similar Republican campaign
signs were stolen from that same area.

Vandals Hit GOP Headquarters

Vandalism forces GOP to spend $2M on stronger security at campaign hdqtrs across the country:
GOP Says Vandalism at Offices Prompts Beefed-Up Security
By SUSAN SCHMIDT and EVAN PEREZ, Oct 12 2008

The Republican National Committee said it will spend $2 million to beef up security at campaign offices around the country in response to recent incidents of vandalism.

RNC Chairman Robert M. "Mike" Duncan said in a statement over the weekend that "violent intimidation tactics" have been adopted by some supporters of Democratic nominee Sen. Barack Obama.

Mr. Duncan cited a break-in at a McCain-Palin campaign office in Missouri and alleged harassment of campaign workers by members of Acorn, an advocacy group that promotes housing opportunities and voting rights for low- and moderate-income groups. Acorn staged a rally outside a McCain-Palin campaign office in Pennsylvania. "It was a peaceful rally," said Acorn spokesman Brian Kettering.

The heated contest between Sens. John McCain and Obama has apparently fueled dozens of vandalism cases and threatening incidents around the country in recent weeks. The latest incident occurred Friday night, when vandals stole signs and spray painted "Republican means slavery" on the door of the Republican Party headquarters in Rock Hill, S.C., according to local press reports.

The Obama campaign said it didn't want to elevate the GOP complaints by commenting on them.......

In other words, the O'Bomber campaign has "no comment" about O'Bomber campaign workers threats, burnings and intimidation of McCain supporters.

O'Bomber has sent his thugs into the streets "to get in the faces of the political opposition".

Word of advice here. Be very damned careful whose face you decide to get in while you're on your mission to intimidate.

O'Bomber supporters are where they've always been...way, way, way over the line.

Halloween display aims for 'shock value'
Democratic backer sends message by showing McCain, in KKK robe, chasing Obama
By Jeff Murray • jdmurray@gannett.com • October 14, 2008

But even Havens was pretty sure his latest effort was over the top. That didn't stop him from setting it up in plain sight anyway.

Havens, who lives on Schuyler County Route 15 (Ridge Road) just south of Odessa, this week set up a Halloween display featuring mannequins that look like Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama and Republican rival John McCain.

But the Obama figure looks like he is running, and the McCain likeness is dressed in the hooded robe of the Ku Klux Klan and is carrying a baseball bat.

Havens is quick to point out he is a liberal and a big supporter of Obama, and that the scene is meant to provoke thought about the way he believes Obama has been unfairly treated by the McCain campaign.

"I figured it would be equally offensive to everyone. It's just for shock value," Havens said. "McCain has been rabble-rousing, calling Obama a terrorist and a Muslim. The McCain campaign has gotten so ugly. That's what the message is. I can see how people could take this the wrong way. I'm not advocating anything. It's sarcasm."

The display is in Havens' front lawn, only a few yards from the highway.

Two years ago, Havens set up a display with a Wizard of Oz theme, with President Bush as the Scarecrow, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice as Dorothy, Vice President Dick Cheney as the Tin Man and former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld representing the Cowardly Lion.

During the 2004 presidential race between Bush and Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry, Bush took on the persona of Dracula in Havens' front lawn, while Kerry appeared as Frankenstein's monster, complete with neck bolts.

Georgia Verdier, president of the Elmira-Corning Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, said she was concerned about the injection of race into the presidential campaign when someone called her to complain about the scene.

After viewing a photograph of Havens' display, Verdier said it seems innocuous enough, but she's still concerned it may send the wrong message.

"It looks friendly but I am concerned not so much about this display, but in general about the fear and hate that have entered the campaign," Verdier said. "This display appears friendly to me. But that's my take. A young lady passed by and had other feelings. We need to be concerned about that. I think we all need to be careful about what messages we send. The message we send is not always the message received."

Havens said he has no plans to take the display down at this time.

Glad we can agree on something Glaucus.

This article is generally within the title of your thread but from a different angle.

I've heard lots of allegations of inappropriate language at campaign rallies..on both sides and mentions in the press.

I don't believe much the press says these days and this article and the event being talked about will explain why.

The only one who heard a threat was one single reporter who hyped it up in a story he wrote. The Secret Service who were all over the rally, other non security members who were all over the rally and attendees who were all over the rally...didn't hear a thing. Only this one single reporter claims to have heard the words shouted out..."kill him".

His name is David Singleton and he's the only one who claims to have heard "kill him". Needless to say, I think David Singleton is just a liar. Of course, his lie was fodder for lots of other liars who also hyped his lie. That's the way it works. One liar lies and the cast of other members of the lying press pick up the lie and spread it around.

Feds probe comment at Palin rally
Scranton reporter heard someone yell ‘kill him’ when Obama’s name mentioned.
By Andrew M. Seder aseder@timesleader.com

SCRANTON – The agent in charge of the Secret Service field office in Scranton said allegations that someone yelled “kill him” when presidential hopeful Barack Obama’s name was mentioned during Tuesday’s Sarah Palin rally are unfounded.

The Scranton Times-Tribune reported the alleged incident on its Web site Tuesday and in its print edition Wednesday. The story, written by reporter David Singleton, included allegations that a man in the audience shouted “kill him” while congressional candidate Chris Hackett was addressing the crowd and mentioned Obama’s name. News organizations including ABC and MSNBC’s “Countdown with Keith Olbermann,” as well as several Internet blogs, repeated the claim, with most attributing the allegations to The Times-Tribune.

Agent Bill Slavoski said he was in the audience along with an undisclosed number of Secret Service agents and not one heard the comment.

“I was baffled,” he said after reading the report.

He said the agency conducted an investigation Wednesday, and could not find one person to corroborate the allegation other than Singleton.

Slavoski said more than 20 non-security agents were interviewed Wednesday, all of whom were at the Republican vice presidential candidate’s rally at the Riverfront Sports Complex.

“We have yet to find someone to back up the story,” Slavoski said. “We had people all over and we have yet to find anyone who said they heard it.”

Hackett said he did not hear the remark.

Slavoski said Singleton was interviewed Wednesday and stood by his story but couldn’t give a description of the man because he said he didn’t see him, he only heard him.

Singleton referred questions to Times-Tribune Metro Editor Jeff Sonderman who said: “We stand by the story. The facts reported are true and that’s really all there is.”

Slavoski said the agents take such threats or comments seriously and immediately opened an investigation, but after due diligence “as far as we’re concerned, it’s closed unless someone comes forward.” He urged anyone with knowledge of the alleged incident to call him at 346-5781.
