Given historical trends of increased liberalization between adults, I'm sure it will, especially as it's so similar to the old furious controversy over interracial marriage. But I don't know when.Obama supports civil unions, but not gay marriages (ie, equality, or more specifically, equality under the law). And actually, I don't know what he really believes, as he's a politician that says what people wants to hear, not his actual agenda. Given that the same populace that elected him in a landslide also voted against gays, I'm not expecting him to do much. But gay marriage was starting to happen on its own, due to economics and state rulings. Then Congress got involved, back by Bill Clinton, and signed the DOMA in response, and this battle has been going ever since. I expect this hostility won't go away until after the older generation passes away. Nevertheless, there's hope that it might be sooner. For example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SnTwrnKb61Q

I think it's inevitable, too. As far as the controversy, I'm not exactly sure what will happen. Gays want to use the term traditionally used for adult partnerships [marriage], but if the unequal stigma can be successfully removed from the term "civil union" maybe this whole issue can go away. It's just a matter of getting the population to accept civil unions as being on equal ground as marriage. IP: Logged | |
