Menstrual artwork. Every board I've posted this on has had really interesting reactions to this and I'm curious about what people here think!

did someone sit on the canvas??? it looks like that, and then used their fingers to make the two, i don't know, empty spaces in the columns.

thanks for sharing. very interesting!

No she doesn't sit on the canvas. She uses the blood as paint. The gallery shows a lot of examples. Some of them are really interesting

Hi Amber

Particularly I don't appreciate anything done with blood.
I found the work creative, interesting, but I would never buy something like this.

I hate to be menstruated so much that I have serious thoughts about removing my uterus...

Therefore this work would remind me something that I don't like...

Thanks for sharing with us

love
Jakie

How disgusting! What next? Semen art? Or how about barf art? Feces art would be a good one. Thank you, but no thank you. While menstrual blood, semen, vomit and feces are part of life, they are out of place in the world of art. MHO

well...
I've seen people make art out of q-tips, macaroni, clay, mud, rocks, hair or fur...

There is that artist.. I can't remember his name... that used cadavers to make his art about the human anatomy.

I've seen plenty of art that's just acrylic on canvas that's just plain ugly or gross.. or that depicts acts of violence and hate. I don't think that's somehow more artistic than this just because the medium is different.

OK, it's a pretty picture she drew, but I have the expression of someone who has just eaten a sour grape. WHile I love women, and everything about us and our bodies, I don't know, if the body is getting rid of that blood, just let it be gone! Don't save it! Doesn't that art work have a mild odor???????
Amber what do YOU think about it.

I mean, when I use a public restroom, and I see someone else's mess, it's pretty gross, but to demonstrate it, to me, is really odd. No I shouldn't say odd, I like odd things. I have to wonder about the artist- I wonder what her sign is???

lol that's a good question - what's her sign?!

Well my first reaction was pretty much similar... "ewww"

But when I looked through the gallery and thought about it.. I am now pretty intrigued. Plus I think the controversy around it is a sort of attraction to me.

She sells prints of the paintings, so of course no odor or anything with those... but in the faq on the site someone asks her that. She says there's no odor at all and the blood is mixed with some sort of clear acrylic to preserve it. But she says a lot of the originals aren't available for sale because they are so dear to her.

What's clay? Years and years (and yearsandyearsandyears) of deposited mineral and organic matter.
So, what're ceramics made out of?

What're paint and stains (traditionally, not that industrial stuff)? Carefully selected and processed mineral and organic matter.
So, what's on old pottery and canvases?

What's blood? Mineral and organic matter?
Eh, no biggie difference to me; and she mixes it w/ a sealing acrylic paint, so it's not like there's a chance of spreading some contagion.

I liked the opening pic - it seems like a pheonix.

OK, the more I thought about it, the more I realized my response was based on that conditioned disgust with menstruation type of stuff. And then I realized it wasn't so bad. Would I ever own one or seek these out to look at, no. But to each there own, and I think it's pretty cool that she did this, probably aware that this wouldn't be the most wonderfully accepted thing. Plus, it probably rocks to see people's expression on their faces, yea, like mine was!

Just because she _can_... (doesn't mean she should, I mean). I hate it when people do that...

Amber,

I meant the front page picture

I found the work to be very interesting, creative, and expressive. Taking away bias, judgement, and fear---I saw the beauty in the moment.

Thank you again for sharing.

Ahhh...i feel compelled to reply but am initially lost for words. A mixture of feelings...

It is interesting from a chemist's point of view as the colour comes from Iron atoms with Oxygen attached all buried within a complex protein, which in turn is buried within a cell, each of which contains an identical replica of the only self-replicating moleculae we know of - DNA. Without the iron (which comprises the core of our planet and is the most stable elemental product from fusion reactions in stars) there would be no colour at all. I like the shapes and curves...I like the phoenix shape. The first picture actually reminds me of fish swimming amongst the stars. The last (3rd) one lookslike the creation of the universe,,,shortly after the big bang.

The fact that it is mixed with acrylic does not preclude the transmission of disease, however. It should be SEALED between glass panes.

I would NOT buy this stuff, but it does go some way towards showing in a non-violent manner, the diversity of human thought and creativity. I `spose it IS very natural...

Each to their own, as long as no-one gets hurt. I am awfully glad I do not menstruate.

Andrew

Ohhhhhhh, I learn something new every day
But wouldn't one have to go around licking the "painting" (or otherwise exposing an orafice 'r such) for transmission to occur?
Just curious.

Yucko! Licking the painting! OMG! i can't stop the pictures in my head!

It depends entirely on the disease(s) and the age of the blood. Acrylic will actually go some way towards preserving the blood and other cells by allowing them to retain water which will prolong the life of some bacteria and diseases...some of which MAY be able to be transmitted through the air or through errant insects that happen to take a liking to the landing surface (or even it's taste, once the acrylic's solvent has evaporated). I mean, the chances are slim, but art should not involve risk to others, no matter how small....

I DO NOT mean to cast dispersions on the personal hygiene of the artist...it's just a safeguard, that's all...

Paint away Tiger!

LOL!

Well most of what she sells are prints so there's no risk of disease transmission there.

*now I keep visualizing licking the paintings... that's pretty icky*

ah, thanks for posting these picture, Amber.
Not only they are very interesting and beautiful but once again I relaised that actually I am able to accept ANYTHING as normal, rarely ever somehting could shock me or repulse me, as long as the intentions are good. Nice work indeed.
