It's my memory of a
sloppy kiss on the lips,
a near toothless grin and a head
tucking itself under your chin.
Small hands grab your shirt
squeezing but not afraid,
they know you won't let go.
Swing them round,
higher and higher off the ground,
squealing in delight
as you race to new heights.
Those eyes of beautiful color
look at you in love and awe,
never believing in the bad
never feeling sad.
Little feet race to keep pace,
thinking maybe it's a game
to keep up with the grown up.
If only they knew
how important it is to you
that they stay innocent for
as long as they can afford.
A tiny voice whispering
I love you in your ear,
those words you love to hear.
Kiss their forehead,
tuck them safely into bed.
Watch them until they fall asleep
and pray to God their soul's to keep.
