When I was very young,
I watched my sister
from the backseat of a car,
stand in our bedroom window
crying as I left.
I don't know where I was going,
or why I was leaving
but I remember her crying.
It's odd how some things
just stick with you.
Now, so many years later
my sister lives in another state,
with her husband and son
and she's happy.
Which makes me proud.
I remember my little brother
always tagging along
behind me, stomping his foot
when I wouldn't let him play with me.
He looked so funny then,
bucked teeth and a tiny body.
Now he grew up to be
bigger than me by a good 2 stones
and a good foot in height.
He's only 10 months younger
than me and we always told
people we were twins.
It made me smile to hear
he still does.
That brother and that sister
and me, we made up a group.
What my family refers to
as the 3 musketeers.
We were always together
and now we're always apart.
We all live so far away
and the phone calls
are few and far between
but we always say "I love you"
when we hang up.
I have 4 more sisters.
One who is almost 10 years older
and 3 younger sisters
who are 7,9,&10 years younger.
I barely know the youngest 2
and the oldest barely speaks to me.
But the one who is only 7 years
younger, she lives with me
and she and I are close.
But there's still not
that connection I had
with the other 2 musketeers.
Aramis, and Athos.
I will always be Porthos ( )
Truly a character to behold
but secretly wishing I were
as smart as Athos
or as strong as Aramis.
When all around us
went to hell
we held hands and talked
about the day when we'd live
in our own kingdom
and could delegate what happened,
and could eat meat pies and chocolate
whenever we wanted.
Me and Athos always thought
Aramis was mom's favorite
'Cause he just had that charm
that made mom smile
no matter what he did wrong.
Not to mention he had a
wicked way of getting us
in and out of trouble too.
Athos, as befits her name,
was the ring leader.
The one who plotted
while me and Aramis executed
her plans.
Growing up, we were definately
"the three inseperables."
Where one went, the other 2 followed.
Even now as I think back,
those are truly the best memories
I have.
Trees were the Cardinal's army,
rocks; the spies he sent after us.
Our mother was the Queen,
and the King was on
a very long business trip.
Our steeds were our legs,
carrying us as fast as they could
to save the day.
The Queen always saw to our
war wounds, taking delight
in our laughter and tales.
Naturally we had our moments
of discord
but don't all people?
When the bad took hold
we conquered and lived to tell the tale.
Somehow, those days
are what carry me through.
I know that if ever I raised my sword
and flag, the other 2 will be there
to help me save the day.
After all,
isn't that what the 3 musketeers do?
