This is a very lighthearted take on a couple of my past relationships...

"The Chipmunk"

In the forest there lived a happy little chipmunk. She had many critter friends, but she always longed for that one special friend who could fill her life with joy and love. One hot summer day, while gathering berries, she came upon a wolf. At first she thought the wolf was too energetic and free spirited to be her friend, but he soon had her in stitches with giggles and she decided that she liked him very much. The wolf told her that the two of them could take magical adventures together. The chipmunk was smitten, and she agreed to accompany the wolf as his special friend.

The chipmunk grew to love the wolf. She admired his courage and tenacity. She wished that she could be more like him. But one day, she found out that she was not the only critter in the wolf's life. The wolf loved to roam and he was a social animal. She tried to remind herself that that was just his nature, but she was still sad. She wanted to feel special and unique. She didn't want to share her special friend with others. She tried to impress the wolf and wanted to make him proud of her. Still, he wouldn't change his mind. He told the chipmunk that he wanted his freedom to go on grand adventures and meet all kinds of critters. The chipmunk felt hurt and defeated, so she left the wolf's den for the last time. When she looked back at the wolf, he was not there. Instead she saw a sleazy, slithering snake. Frightened by the predator, she quickly scurried away.

The chipmunk continued on her journey, and met many critters but none tickled her fancy the same way that the wolf had. Then, as winter approached, she met a fox. The chipmunk thought the fox was the most adorable little creature she had ever seen. The fox was gentle and kind, and they became fast friends.

The fox had an easy life. He never had to work very hard so he indulged in many things. He had a lavish den where the chipmunk felt very comfortable. The fox loved music the same way the chipmunk did, and they spent hours listening together. The chipmunk began acting as the fox would, and she almost forgot that she was a chipmunk.

Still, the chipmunk felt that something was not right. She didn't trust the fox. He was sly and mysterious. He seemed like he was hiding things from her, and not telling her the truth. The chipmunk became suspicious. She was once bitten, twice shy and did not want to be fooled again. She wondered if he was just another wolf in fox clothing. She tried to tell the fox that she couldn't be his friend anymore, but he insisted that she stay. He convinced her, but she was still uneasy.

Finally, one night after the first snow, the fox told her that he too wanted freedom to roam, just like the wolf. The chipmunk was devastated because she felt like she had been tricked. But she picked herself up by her little chipmunk feet and headed out of the fox's den for good. Once again, she turned around to look at the fox one more time. He was not there. In his place was a creepy, eight-legged spider. The spider was motioning for the chipmunk to come back but she didn't. She ran as fast as she could.

The chipmunk decided to stay away from other critters for a while, and concentrate on getting to know herSelf. She had learned that things are not always as they appear to be. She knew that what she needed, and what she hoped for, was to someday meet another chipmunk...who would truly understand her.
