I havent been in much of a poetry reading mood lately, but couldnt put this one down.

"I was a fledgling crossing the ocean.
You were a branch floating by"

This is HUGE yet succinct. Great visual and great choice of wording there. It would make for a nice work of art.

How many times I have felt this way too...

Well done.

other favorite parts:

quote:
Most people choose their beliefs according to what makes them feel good.
This is why so many intelligent people are miserable;
they are unable to deceive themselves about their condition,
and must choose their beliefs according to what makes sense.

Most people can't get their hands on a little happiness or good fortune without taking credit for it, and blaming others for lacking it.

A zealot is someone who always smiles and praises God's goodness, while burning His martyrs at the stake.

&

quote:
They fear silence as they fear death;
because it might (God forbid!)
provide an occassion for self-reflection.

Fantasy is the best reality has to offer.
[or]
Fantasy is the better part of reality.

I hear you.

"Like a vagrant,
I fall asleep on the steps of my prayer,
and never ascend to the door of your mansion, Lord."

oh!

"Like a thief,
I have made the night my day,
become a stranger to the seasons,
and an enemy of the good."

"A thousand unlocked doors between us,
but I still search for a key."

ohhhhhhh very nice
♫a thousand churches♫

oh
they are all sooo good
sooo beautiful and deep... they feed my heart and soul

"Lord,
did you make the worms for the birds,
or the birds for the worms?"

OH! How you say things...

oh my steve
stop
stop
you are making me fall in love with you again

YAY!!!!

You guys are so nice!

T, I'm so glad you read and liked it.

Yeah, a painting!

It would be cool either way:

The bird flying over the ocean, spying the branch down below, or headed in its direction.

Or the bird perched on the branch, floating, in the middle of a vast expanse of water.

I'm surprised you identified with some of the other ideas, but pleased.

Melanie!!!!!!

You dont love me, you just love my saggy-style.

You are such a gift to me, I can't tell you.

I like the ones you chose, too.

Especially, "a thousand unlocked doors".
I think that one says a lot, very succinctly.

This one is even more loaded:

I was a burning book.
You were the breeze that fanned the flames,
and carried just one page to safety.

(Especially if you think about what book-burning means,
and understand that this was written to God.)

And I like these ones, and want to use them in a poem:

Rice scattered on water;
stars in the night sky.

Birds shining behind branches;
the moon singing behind clouds.

Birds dart thru branches,
like shafts of light,
shook loose by the wind.

And this one:

They wear crosses like anchors around their necks,
and fall on their knees like ships run aground;
their hands, joined in prayer, fork the sand.
"Lord, deliver us from oceans, though we be ships!"

Those are my favorites.

The Tavern

All day I think about it,
then at night I say it.
Where did I come from,
and what am I supposed to be doing?
I have no idea.

My soul is from elsewhere,
I'm sure of that,
and I intend to end up there.

This drunkenness began in some other tavern.
When I get back around to that place,
I'll be completely sober.

Meanwhile,
I'm like a bird from another continent,
sitting in this aviary.

The day is coming when I fly off,
but who is it now in my ear who hears my voice?
Who says words with my mouth?

Who looks out with my eyes?
What is the soul?
I cannot stop asking.

If I could taste one sip of an answer,
I could break out of this prison for drunks!

I didn't come here of my own accord,
and I can't leave that way.
Whoever brought me here will have to take me home.

This poetry.
I never know what I'm going to say.
I don't plan it.
When I'm outside the saying of it,
I get very quiet and rarely speak at all.

Good job, HSC

"A thousand unlocked doors between us,
but I still search for a key."

"There are two ways humanity may yet preserve itself:
The first is by becoming more compassionate.
The second is by becoming more cruel.
And I'm not sure about the first."

"Fantasy is the best reality has to offer.
[or]
Fantasy is the better part of reality."

Keep up the good work, HSC!

I loved that one especially too. I was going to ask you to explain the burning book.

Thanks, guys!

I didnt think of this before but,

the fledgling crossing the ocean...

the branch floating by...

the branch could signify that land is near!

I didnt even see it.

It would make a good painting.

Melanie, the burning book...

the burning ego...
the burning psyche...

why do people burn books?

censorship...

a fascist, dogmatic agenda...

the ego wrestling with God...

God burning the ego like a "bad" book...

God as fascist...

from the perspective of the ego...

but what is the page He saves?

one page.

why?

because it was "kosher"?

flames...

alchemy...

the individuation process...

flames refining the self...

"I was a book"

the ego has a story...

what is the one page?

The Self.

The Atman.

Where the Will of God agrees with the Will of the Self.

The domes of polished churches gleam;
Turned-down goblets with broken-steepled stems.
These priests have drunk too much!!
Or is it not enough?

I haven't read it all yet, but the wit in this one is great:

"You held me and your eyes beamed forgiveness.
Then you showed me to my seat at the kiddie table."

Love that. That's why you'd make a great singer.

"to have an ideal is not to be godless"

I got caught up on that line for a second. I think it's because it's a double negative in a way, and I'm only pointing it out in case you care to edit. If you don't, no worries.

Thanks.

I don't think there's anything wrong with a double-negative,
as long as the meaning is intended and the cadence is improved.

I'm from a more cynical generation, AG.

My sense of humor is too.
