Does anyone here work with this medium?Since the last painting I was working very hard on turned into a huge disaster (after spending roughly 7 hours on it. it will eventually get gessoed) and the ones before werent coming out well either, i have had no desire to pick up a brush and dont think i will for awhile. Lately though, i have had a strong urge to draw, which is really what i do best. The thought of being limited to grays and blacks is sort of depressing though. I don't like the look or effects of colored pencils either. I'm taking this as my cue to explore a new medium. So I picked up some oil pastels today and thought I would try my hand at them. I'm researching the ins and outs, how-to's now. If anyone has any advice, please share here. IP: Logged |

I've only used them a couple of times... Surrealmuse inspired me, when I found her website, in 2003. IP: Logged |

this will be considered mixed media since i started with some splotches of watercolor for a base. you notice it where the big red flowers are, the rest has largely been covered up by the pastels.IP: Logged |

Like I was just reading elsewhere on the web, i too like pastels because of their immediacy and vibrant colors. They dont lighten like watercolors or darken like acrylics. And less mess! Dont have to sit around waiting for them to dry.Maybe someday I will be able to afford the $50 set of fine pastels instead of the $5 student ones. IP: Logged |

That is gorgeous, T! Those are the colors I am considering using in the baby's room. I've been looking everywhere for something that is feminine, but not bubble gummy pink like most stuff out there. I love the jewel toned colors in this piece. So vibrant and striking.. And I love the blue of her eyes, they are captivating! Keep up the good work, you've found another medium that you will master, I'm sure!! IP: Logged |

Thank you!! What a great idea for a color scheme for a baby girls room! Fabulous, and way better than bubble gum pink, I totally agree! IP: Logged |

I've never been able to use them. The feel of them on my hands bug me. Just like when I had to do charcoal in college. AAAAACCCK! Have you tried watercolor pencils. They are my current favorite. Very portable as well. They give amazing variations in shades. BUT, only problem is that the cheap ones are so much...less. As with most art supplies, if ya know what I mean. I've been buying one watercolor pencil at a time, for a few years. By the time I have all the colors I want, I'll hafta learn to paint with my feet because I will be so old, arthritis will have set in my hands. (already has started) oh well, sry for barging into your convo, great topic BTW.IP: Logged |

26Taurus; What do you think of oil pastels? The colors are kinda dense, but you don't have to do as much layering.IP: Logged |

Hey Gypsy!Yeah, i love watercolor pencils too! I really only use them sometimes when i'm doing a portrait and need to get in some detail. I have the cheapo ones now. Maybe someday when/if i'm not a 'starving artist, i'll get some decent supplies. That's a good idea about building up slowly. I know what you mean about the mess of pastels. I dont really mind though and prefer oils, though i was doing some drawings today and using my chalk/hard pastels. ...maybe i'll post them. I'd love to see some of your work too! It's nice to have another artist in the group. IP: Logged |

Thanks for the welcome! My true passion is mixed media collage. But I will use crayons if I have to. I was born this way, were you?IP: Logged |
