When did the past become a monster,
blown out of all proportion,
demonized and grim?

At what point did I begin to doubt all love
bring the same pattern of yearning,
and be rejected for being me?

I'd love to take a time machine,
tell the old me it's not worth the pain
Somehow I think she'd relive it all
to feel the burn of inspiration again

Grateful I am for immaturity in others,
pushing me out
and carving up my heart.

Without them, love would equal loss to me
and I may have thought, wrongly,
that love equals martyrdom

I love them now, I love them still,
find in my heart compassion

I'd like to say we're past those games
I'd like to reach out a hand
Can we be friends after that ancient mess,
Or will you walk past with emotion so bland?
