In this digital age of voiceless banter
where "why, do you care?' and "why do you care?" sound the same
We drag our weary hearts on the ride
to a place of where eyes can't connect

We're here, but not here
with a checked-out soul
Gone from noticing details
as our "devices" prioritize people

Birthday wishes and supportive "thumbs up"
Empty shells of an objective world
As we scroll through our 642 friends
how can we know who needs us most?

Would we even take the time,
pause to hear the tears,
or read the status update
of an overburdened friend when there's Angry Birds to play?

Can you really listen closely to a friend's band,
or read the outpourings of a friend's pain?
Do you have it in you to reach outside,
and do others know you are really there?
