"The Queen and the Pawn"
Every King she met before would beat her. They wanted her limitless power for themselves, and none for her. They recognized her as a King and treated her as such. When visiting Kings complimented her King because of her, he beamed with pride. When they spoke to her directly and she answered in kind, he would show her who was really the King and who was meant to be beneath him.
This troubled the Queen, who tried desperately to become smaller so he would finally love her. What she didn't realize was that the power struggle had nothing to do with love. What he didn't realize is that it was because she loved him that she was strong, but also dying.
One day, she gave birth to a pawn. She watched this pawn curiously and saw its potential. She heard the soft cries of the mewling pawn, her heart aching inside. She swore she would obtain victory for this pawn and clear a pathway for it to move through. The Queen cracked foundations and watched them crumble as her true power sparked back to life.
She descended from her throne of self complacency and denial, taking the pawn with her. There was no kingdom that wanted to cloak the disparaged Queen. They told her she was worthless without a King's protection. She wilted knowingly, a part of her agreeing with them. Many Kings attempted to pick her up, having experienced flickers of her power. They were unworthy. How could she swear fealty to them and their mounds of trash? Was she to become the Queen of rubbish? She sent them away, distancing her heart and hiding her bewilderment. Her power was undirected, untouched, and running wild. She had to learn how to harness this power; it came effortlessly to a King. For her, she was no King, but she knew she played the role well.
One day, the Queen stared out the window and wondered if her efforts were in vain. She planned on sending the pawn back to the King for his protection. She was bone tired and her fire was running cold. The Queen knew she would be worthless soon and still strongly desired to see the pawn to safety. The pawn sensed this silence and crawled onto the Queen's lap.
The pawn looked to her and said, "I want to be just like you." It was like this the Queen's fires became rekindled and her will to live flared back to life.
The Queen smiled and answered, "I want to be just like you too."
