My friend wants me to sing in his rap. He likes my voice so I recorded the female chorus I just cant really SING it though. I can only SPEAK it. I don't understand why its so hard for me to actually sing. How can I learn to actually sing it without sounding like I'm tone deaf?

I took voice lessons a long time ago, I would imagine now- there are plenty of vocal exercises to be found online via youtube or something, for perfecting your sound the way you'd like to. Just an idea.

Elixir? Sounds to me like you really really want to do a good job!? So much to be commended for!

*ahem*.... Feeling rather more-philosophical today. So!

Mechanically/technically, you probably know that 'the brain' needs to "hear" the pitch before it can be accurately reproduced. Sound is of the mind, AND in the Soul. You can't sing a pitch that you cannot first 'hear' inside your imagination.

Now, some songs defy "understanding"~~ Melodically, knowing where or how "that" particular note you sing fits in to the final product, can defy imagination.

For me, I'm a 'chord' person.... I feel more secure when I 'hear' my note as it belongs in the chord being played. Many people like to learn their parts as though it were a separated melody heard within a series of chords. And with some types of atonal-like pieces it can be hard to hear 'what's right'.... What sounds 'wrong' to our accustomed hearing can be the right thing when it corresponds to the Whole of it.

(A little background... When I sang in choirs, we'd have sexuals,~~ oops, I mean 'sectionals' haha! !!! Sections of voices would split off to go learn their notes melodically, separate from the chords.
( Then there were seasons of time where I sang in back-up ensembles for (church) choirs, and or the guest soloists.)
( It's been such a loooonnnngggg time for me now. I would be rusty at?... well, at least maybe terribly 'nervous.' But, I DO miss the thrill very much. Especially just getting together as family and friends. I was an enthusiastic good amateur, that's all. Enthusiasm is contagious! *grin* Makes everything sound better when pumped with echos of joy and passions. ~~ A Legend in my own mind! swoon!! Acapella-friends singing Christmas Season Carols are my spiritual penultimate exhilaration. Ha, just thinking about it makes me tremble again~~ so powerful and uplifting. Some of the Best energetic most-wholesome experiences of my entire lifetime were "those"-- they still keep on resonating deeeep in my soul *breathe*)

A person who sings with a lot of Soul 'understands' 'the pitch' they make.

So! In a rhetorical sense, in your own private exploration and thoughts, ~~~

Could you be 'resisting' hearing or understanding the pitch because a part of you needs to process the Meaning. Apply this self-analysis to multi-levels of instances: from musical notations on the page, all the way to your Heart's core 'relationship' with it and/or "him"...)?

And, could there be a part of you NOT in Agreement (or 'resonating') to or with 'the composer's message': Could be both?, in the context of any of those Meanings you feel inside?

Sometimes we can have the Right pew (direction and dreams), but it's in a 'setting' that has way too many limitations imposed ~~ The resulting realization of the 'difference' could be very freeing for you and remove blocks with hardly making a physical change to it!

I mean, there's 'mechanical' singing lalalala. And then, there's the psychology behind it. Even a Soul Psychology. To sensitive musicians whose Souls are being drawn fresh into new directions now, there are even-deeper merging of Meanings....

There's an "essence" to the core of all this. You may find yourself in a position where your soul wants it to "matter" ... What will that universal Sound be reproducing TO the audience of your Worlds of Influence. ~~ Is the message in-line with the messenger's soul and its intention?

I don't know your situation, or anything regarding your friend's music.... :bheart: I'm responding with gentle positive affection towards a fellow LL Artiste! (Always The Best!, *We are Family* song!)

Some Rap is incredibly powerful~~ awesome, moving and inspiring!! While other (by its original intention when it was composed) can be filled with things that can weigh-down and sink the Soul into a realm where it becomes not-congruent with its particular growth and development during 'certain' sensitive seasons of Time. It can come and go. What would be 'okay' at one time, is not appropriate at others.

Sometimes the soul gathers itself into a more-protective mode 'for just that reason,' in its specific season of time... Like, if I use the metaphor for attending to body's needs for nutrition, then the message would equate to 'appetite'.... Following your appetites can help Balance you. There are wonts for certain foods during periods of development or growth. When the soul is pregnant, it can crave or be repulsed by even the usual 'favorite' things. heh-heh-heh... Music can be powerful Soul Food. Cultures the Things that are Within it.

Yep, definitely gettin' seriously philosophical here... :)

He "likes" your voice, and that's such a thrill and a Beautiful rush to be 'chosen' to sing, to be featured in something important to him, and you. It's something you're originally good at? And it follows along some kind or type of energetic desire you have?.....

Another thought is based on a practical experiential one....

Sometimes a producer will ask you to make 'sounds' or 'singing' that to "you" that are not on the 'menu' of your own personal accustomed-habits, or interpretations. To your ear, some sounds are 'just awful' ~~ (like 'you're tone deaf', you say). But!!!! WHEN and after the "product" comes together, when the project is eventually "presented" with all its compiling finishes applied, you may be SUPER-surprised at just how perfectly your voice "fit." Judging yourself too soon ('while' your trying to do it) can hurt or ruin what you're trying to produce (at every level of Being). (That's where some self-sabotaging comes into the picture.) Answer is to gently wait for it as best you can. You MAY be soooo satisfied and surprised with the overall effect! Just do your best.

Elixir, it's hard to resist being overly self-critical and to question what your Part is~~ especially when you care so deeply, and are not maybe getting the proper feedback on-instant?.... Sometimes you have to wait. There are no words that can rightly 'explain' as actually hearing the finished product. 'A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words?...'

Do "Trust the Process".... Believe in your self, and in your musical sense.

Not everything 'perfect' is Beautiful.... It's the "experience" by self, the participants, and ultimately the audience, that counts. You may be absolutely elegantly surprised at some of the results that come out of this.

Much Love to You!! Keep on Singing!

(Having a problem posting this.... Hope it goes now, disabled smilies) (okay, it went through... but my battery went out, need to recharge.... *laughing* and gotta EAT something. Still learning what it will take to be Breatherian. LOL)
