I don't know from where
His staunch military mind-set comes
How can I give him a second glimplse,
into the distinct mortality fears I face?

I see so many other potential paths
for a warm-hearted masculine being such as he
His people skills and creative approach to life
lend themselves more to a public service without death

His caring mind and bravely gentle nature,
Overlooked and wasted in rigid routine
He doesn't belong in an early grave
Simply since no one encourages his other talents

I want to know twenty years down the road
that my dear "best" friend thought this choice thoroughly out
He deserves to know how precious his life is to many,
Irreplacable with n'er a doubt

I actually do, Ayelet. He is now a recovering addict, though we still keep in touch from time to time, and he enlisted, but was kicked out, not sure the story behind that. It's been 15 years since I've seen him face-to-face, but I'm glad he is at least alive.
