I know we talk about free will all the time, but do you really think we can change what's written in our natal charts? I guess sometimes I feel condemned. For example, my 7th is in capricorn (barren sign), it's ruler saturn in virgo (barren sign) square venus in gemini (barren sign). All this tells me I will never be able to have a long lasting relationship. My 2nd house is in virgo (barren sign) with saturn in it. Seems I tend to have economic difficulties. So, can I change this? Can I have a nice long lasting relationship? Can I make good money?
I see natal charts as maps of potentials, not of something determinant. But sometimes I'm not sure.
What do you think? Has astrology been determinant in your life?

Astrology, I think, is a reflection of who we are, and we are a reflection of it as well.
Our charts may point to talents and weaknesses, but in the end it's up to us to make the best of them.
I've managed to 'overcome' some of the 'bad' aspects in my own chart by working toward awareness. And I am sure I am not alone.

BTW, a lot of the aspects you're talking about ...it has to do with perception of how you see them.
Forget all that barren stuff. That's old school symbolism.
Saturn in the 7th just means you're more serious about relationship and want a mature person. The 7th describes the person you want or end up with, not necessarily the conditions. I've met a lot of happy people in relationships with Saturn in the 7th. Their partners are serious, and sometimes older, or younger (Saturn can sometimes mean significant age differences when in the 7th).
Virgo in the 2nd? I have Gemini in the 2nd. It's Mercury, it means your flow of money might be erratic, but it also means you can make money by knowing how to talk. It also means you can juggle and multi-task well with money. Saturn in the 2nd just means you're willing to work twice as hard as most people, and will see a reward.

Perspective is everything, it's all in how you look at it

I look at charts as potentials too...what I think is that with events that seem fated, or very negative, that there are lessons in them with the potential for positive change as the outcome. I can't tell you what the outcome for your 7th/saturn absolutely should be, but I can see the positives with that to some degree. Saturn has a great deal of maturity behind it, and a mature, strong, sober relationship can be a great thing.

As an example, I have a lot of difficult squares and oppositions in my chart. Some of them point towards potential for abusive events, and I've suffered from abuse, which of course would come across as fated and out of my control and very negative. I could potentially feel like astrology did this to me, that my life will always be this way. But instead I've cut off all ties to my abusers, I've been to therapy a few times, I've set up healthy boundaries. These are all also potentials of my chart, of the same hard aspects that showed potential for abuse.

So maybe it's a mix of both, determinant and free will. I think astrology is lessons and energy to be learned, and potential for positive growth.

I have Saturn AND Uranus square Venus both in the 7th and I've had many relationships, the longest was 2 1/2 years (which is pretty long when you're only 20). My DSC is in Sagittarius too, which they say doesn't bode well for long relationships.

I think you'll be fine.

Barren? Barren??

Capricorn is an earth sign so it brings things about into physical manifestation.
Plus it's ruler saturn is again in an earth sign virgo.

I see this as a good thing if you want to have relationships in your life.

I just wanted to add that when I look at a chart and I want to see how the aspects are manifesting, I look to the elements to point me in a direction.

Capricorn and virgo with saturn in earth can be very good!

Also in answer to your question, I don't think we act outside of our chart.

Never minding other thing to consider, let's just take venus in capricorn as an example. This person simply is not going to act like an aries, ever. But there are so many levels of being venus in capricorn, endless ways. Then you throw in aspects, and you can focus on one outlet more than another.

So while not acting outside of our chart. Just one chart has so many levels and choices within it, that we do have a chance to develope the way we want.

Thank you, all the replies were helpful. I guess charts also show how we perceive the world. For example, my saturn in the 2nd always makes me worried about money, while my brother has jupiter in 2nd so he never worries and enjoys spending it, and we both come from the same family so it's not like one is much richer (or much poorer) than the other, we just relate to money differently.
I also suppose (and hope) that saturn sq venus in my case shows that I feel unloved and not worthy of it, not the fact that I won't be loved. It's my perception of myself and love. I guess the challenge is to value myself more (saturn in 2nd) and believe that I deserve to be loved.
