I think it's a level of seriousness probably.
I think it's a level of fear about letting go regarding power and the greater mysteries surrounding the 8th...sex, idea about death, just about anything profound. I would say in and of itself Saturn in the 8th makes for increased sensitivity about 8th house issues.
Saturn partially represents or weakness or fear or what we have a blockage with, and need to 'grow up' about, in a way.
What sign is Saturn in, in your friend's chart, Rosie? It would say more as well about the placement. Also, whatever aspects are made to the personal planets will say more...it's hard to read the planet by itself in a house without the aspects which tell the story.

maybe they prefer short term relationships because people don't get a chance to hurt them.

I dealt with this a while back.. it was tough for me because I really had a transforming time.. but I have an 8th house sun and mercury in cancer..it was all about what i have and what i could lose very quickly. security and maturity.

I believe his saturn, he is a man by the way, is in Pisces.Aspects:
sextiles sun
sextiles moon
sextiles mars
squares jupiter
trines neptune
So would this be a well aspected planet despite a square to mars?
