I was born with Virgo rising.

I can be a 'corrector' of inaccuracies and a penetrating analyzer of others, but it starts with myself. When molehills are turned into mountains, then things are out of balance.

You're not completely comfortable within your own body/nervous system, but project it onto others. Once you are comfortable and accepting of yourself and your own imperfections then what you see in others won't bother you so much, or at all. This means being comfortable enough with yourself to wear your imperfections as an acknowledgement of your humanity rather than hiding them, covering them up and pretending perfection.

The healthy Virgo type understands that there is no absolute perfection in life or in others and learns to consider what is beautiful or even very satisfying in the moment as having a perfection of its own. The undeveloped or unhealthy Virgo type is still looking for and expecting "perfection" from self and others.

"Our ideas of perfect are so imperfect."

Because they're perfectionists.

That's literally the reason; it manifests into a critical nature. They look for perfection in everything, and if it doesn't match up to their high standards AND that specific thing's full capability/potential, they criticize to vent. They also criticize in hopes of bringing up the issue so that it's improved upon, sub-consciously. Whether or not it is, their mind will force them to say it, even if it is futile. In other words, they're not consciously criticizing for the issue to be improved, they just do it because of their sub-conscious nature of perfection. And if they truly believe it is possible for something to be improved, of course they will consciously and constructively criticize it and/or provide a possible solution to the problem.

What's interesting is at work especially it comes out as me generating ideas, rather than criticizing what is.
Just, "what about this....?" if they shoot it down, oh well. But I like to try to make improvement, make a difference.

It's very rarely that I nitpick.

A very virgo-an person once explained to me that striving for perfection is fun. The fun is in the process. Makes them feel that their "new" self is better than the old ones.

I guess I can see the appeal.

Yeah, I do the same thing, and then they shoot it down.

But I criticize as well, but I try to be nice about it.

I see your point and I agree.

My s.o has virgo moon/mars/venus and he pretty much has similar views. One time we were talking about our attitude towards life, career, play..etc... and I used an example about my hobby. I explained that I just “enjoy doing what I liked and I felt no need to try to be better/try to perfect my skills. Enjoyment was the goal.

He replied, saying that if I didn’t bring my skills to another level, how could I fully “enjoy” my hobby. Like a computer game, if I couldn’t pass level 1 then I couldn’t enjoy the fun of level 2.

^ Seems that you have already found balance. That's good.

I have an overabundance of earth, so sometimes I'm a bit sluggish. At other times I get caught up in the moment (fire moon in the 3rd). He certainly gives me a gentle push in the right direction.

Well, they are mutable and they are Earth.
Mutable is said to analyze, live in the head or, if in a bad state, fret a lot of the time in the process of adapting to the environment (i should know as i am mostly mutable). They strive for change and growth. Earth is disciplined, practical, materialistic, and cautious.

Put these together and you have someone who grows by adapting into what they think is more practical. They feel like they are stagnant if they do not tweak the subject in question.

(My mom has virgo sun, merc, and mars. i have the virgo mars.)
