Warning: Long post ahead. It's a bit of a tangent, as it doesn't really focus on the 8H but rather on the topic of attraction itself.
I want to mention that houses carry as much significance as signs, and should not be ignored. (The concept was initially presented to me by astrologer Dawn Bodrogi.)
Example: your DSC is in Aries, but you don't attract Aries.
Look at where Mars is - sign AND house. You may very well attract that type of energy.
You may also attract people with 1H planets (Aries' house).
Worth noting: look at what houses planets in the relationship houses rule, they can offer more insight.
Example: You have Neptune in the 5H in Scorpio. You don't seem to attract Scorpio nor Leo energy (sign/house)... Neptune rules your MC and what you attract is Capricorn/10H energy instead (although it's usually a mix of all those).
Same goes for "traditional" relationship planets (for heterosexual people at least):
- woman's Sun and Mars - the sign and house they're in, and the houses they rule;
- man's Moon and Venus - the sign and house they're in, and the houses they rule.
Don't forget that the other person's houses are just as important.
If you have a Sagittarius DSC but don't seem to attract Sag energy, you may very well attract 9H people instead (Sag's house) (or people with a prominent Jupiter). So it's not all about the sign. (:
(And of course don't forget the DSC ruler.)
(I think that) if a relationship planet that's supposed to be a female significator in a woman's chart falls in a relationship house or rules a relationship house, it can be used in addition to the Sun and Mars; and same for men with masculine significators.
Example: You're a woman and have Venus in Sagittarius in the 7H. You can use Venus as a significator for your partner in addition to other things (Sun, Mars, Jupiter-Dsc ruler, other 7H or 5H planets, etc).
You may very well attract energies represented by your Venus placement even if you're a woman, as it's in the 7H (or if it rules your DSC, or if it's in the 5H/ruled the 5H, etc).
You may attract the sign/house that Venus is IN (Sagittarius/Libra), but also the sign/house it rules.
Say, that same Venus rules the 12H and the 6H - then instead of being attracted to super-Sag/9H or super-Libra/7H energy, you'll attract Piscean/12H or Virgoan/6H energy.
Though as I previously mentioned, it's usually a mix of all that.
And of course the ruler of the DSC should always be taken into account - in this case, Jupiter (sign, house, aspects...).
(Yes it can get a bit complicated, but I do hope you get what I'm trying to explain.)
I can't say if it works for the 8H (personal experience complicates matters here, since my 7H and 8H are in the same sign), but I am fairly sure it works for the 7H and often for the 5H as well.
(There are generally repetitions/"themes" in charts anyway, so overlaps between the different factors are common.)
Oh dear, I think I've given myself a headache here. *vanishes*
