Saturn's meaning in solar returns is exactly the same as in all transits, since that is what a solar return involves transits.

I wouldn't read anything into Saturn on the Dc of a solar return chart. Solar return charts are infamously inaccurate as to Asc/houses. The only houses that matter are the ones in your birth chart. I'm a professional astrologer and I don't even use solar return chart. For them to even have the remotest possibility of accuracy you must first have a perfectly rectified, precisely accurate birth chart. Most people do not.

Look at where Saturn's transits to planets in your birth chart for real understanding of its role in your life now.

the birth chart works because your neurons have been untouched. a solar return is not the same because just because the sun passing by the same place it was when you were born, is not much different from any other transit. these alignments are not very significant.

imb

one is an actual physical cause (quintilions of particles in your brain being set)

Kannon...whyyyy. I've seen you make this comment before and I always wanted to ask because I think you're an awesome astrologer, but whyyyyy on the Solar Returns??? Between these and the Lunar Returns, they have been the most helpful (for me) at pinpointing events especially when taking into consideration transits and progressions. When I look back at specific years, I can see how the SR shows the energy of that year, especially when looking at planets conjunct the MC/IC or AC/DC axis, which sign the moon is located in, what sign is on the ASC, and definitely the houses! How can you not use them?

Lessons with "others" in general. Or work/restrictions with others. Your major relationships.

Because I'm smart enough not to and I'm not a blind follower of the crowd. As a practicing astrologer I'm responsible to use tools that work consistently for all clients. Solar returns cast as separate charts do not. If it works for you, great.

You may get benefit from them, but that does not mean they will be reliable for all persons. Any solar return chart will be off by as much as the natal chart is off at the Asc (and all houses). So only if you are starting with an exactly accurate Asc as I stated above, is there any chance it could be accurate along house lines. There are solid reasons why I do not do them, and why I discourage them, which relate to both the chart mechanics (not reliable), and the presumption that such a chart, even if accurately cast, tells you what you need to know for the whole year, giving answers for the whole year. I do not accept that premise because s.r. charts cannot always show all transit aspects that can come into/out of orb during the year. I extend predictive tools to no more than about 6 months at a time.

The only houses that matter are the ones in the birth chart. Study it. Know it. Use transits to those points in that house context. Such transit information set against the backdrop of your natal positions maintains the proper reference point and continues to include that foundational natal information rather than assuming a different one with a whole new set of houses.

I could just start doing them and take people's money, but I won't. I decide what predictive tools stand up to my standards. So I use the ones that are reliable, because I'm responsible for the interpretive information I give out.

The problem is that astrology has become immensely commercial in the digital age in a way it never was before. In the old days we astrologers would cast all the charts. Now anybody with a computer online can get one and assume they've got the essential thing (chart), but just need someone to interpret it. If you don't understand how the chart was created in the first place, or have never examined its possible issues in detail then there's no way to know possible reasons why it isn't necessarily the best tool.

I've had friends who went to an astrologer once a year and got their s.r. chart done. Fine, but I don't find it a useful tool, just a convenience based on a nifty theory. Not all astrologers use these, by the way. My friend Don Borkowski has been an astrologer a lot longer than I have and does not interpret solar returns with houses, etc. He simply looks at the transits in strongest aspect to the Sun as holding the dominant issues of focus.

lisalisa, you deserve a more specific answer regarding Saturn.

The energy and purpose of Saturn is the same in any type of transit role, depending on the aspects it forms to natal planets. A solar return chart is an arrangement of the transting planets within the form of a separate horoscope purported to display the astrological conditions of the current year, as timed by exact return of the Sun to its natal position. So you see, everything references the natal chart and is entirely free floating as to you and your life without it.

I'll quote from page 317 of Robert Hand's classic work Planets in Transit so you've got an undeniable authority ...

quote:

"Significance of Transiting Saturn

Saturn is one of the most important planets to examine in your transits, for it represents the way you see and experience the universe as you have structured it. The locoation of transiting Saturn in your [natal] chart indicates the part of your life that is being examined and tested at that time. The [natal] house that Saturn is in represents the areas of greatest tension in your life, to which you must direct your closest attention."

In my own words, Saturn's transit position by aspects to your natal planets shows the specific areas that need to be tested, put to work, and strengthened at any given time. Saturn's process helps us discover the reach of our strength and limitations as we develop. It can help time endings and beginnings from more serious considerations of the lasting consequences to beliefs, arrangements, and decisions we make. For example, Saturn's position parallel, conjunct, square, or opposite natal Mercury is a time of serious thinking devoted to study or deeper scrutiny of the patterns in our personal lives, often leading us to say goodbye to someone who is too negative or controlling, or to some interest no longer serving us. It changes thinking and communication patterns.

Most of the time Saturn's influence or effects lie somewhere in-between beginnings and endings, which means requiring patience, persistent effort, limitations, etc, to gain greater control over what is truly ours to control.

Thank you for answering. I appreciate it. I think because I use astrology as a hobby for myself, friends and family, I haven't paid attention to the consistency/ accuracy of the SR outside of my own bubble. I can see how it would be a problem if the natal was off by even a few minutes. For me though, the SRs and LRs are so important. And I agree, you can't see events for a whole year, but I guess I see them as the main picture? Time and again I do see some similarities. Pregnancies, for example, have several common traits in a SR. New relationships. A major move. Career expansion, etc. So when I look at the transits and then see it confirmed in the SR, I guess it feels more definable to me. If I notice I have a major transit coming up, I look for the time period it will be exact and if the SR and LRs look especially significant, I know something big is happening. Confirmation, I guess. Anyway, thank you again for allowing me to pick your brain.
