"The Irony Of It All"
by The Streets

Hello, Hello. My names Terry and I'm a law abider
There's nothing I like more than getting fired up on beer
And when the weekends here I like to exercise my right
to get paralytic and fight a good bloke fairly
But I get well leery when geezers look at me funny
Bounce 'em round like bunnies
I'm likely to cause mischief
Good clean grief you must believe and I ain't no thief.
Law abiding and all, all legal.
And who cares about my liver when it feels good
What you need is some real manhood.
Rasher, Rasher, Barney and Kasha, putting peoples backs up.
Public disorder, I'll give you public disorder.
I down eight pints and run all over the place
Spit in the face of an officer
See if that bothers you cause I never broke a law in my life
Someday I'm gonna settle down with a wife
Come on lads lets have another fight...

Eh hello. My names Tim and I'm a criminal,
In the eyes of society I need to be in jail
For the choice of herbs I inhale.
This ain't no wholesale operation
Just a few eighths and some Playstations my's vocation
I pose a threat to the nation
And down the station the police hold no patience
Let's talk space and time
I like to get deep sometimes and think about Einstein
And Carl Jung And old Kung Fu movies I like to see
Pass the hydrator please
Yeah I'm floating on thin air.
Going to Amsterdam in the New Year - top gear there
Cause I taker pride in my hobby
Home made bongs using my engineering degree
Dear Leaders, please legalise weed for these reasons.

Like I was saying to him.
I told him: "Top with me and you won't leave."
So I smacked him in the head and downed another Carling
Bada Bada Bing for the lad's night.
Mad fight, his face's a sad sight.
Vodka and Snake Bite.
Going on like a right geez, he's a twat,
Shouldn't have looked at me like that.
Anyway, I'm an upstanding citizen
If a war came along I'd be on the front line with em.
Can't stand crime either them hooligans on heroin.
Drugs and criminals those thugs on the penny coloured will be the downfall of society
I've got all the anger pent up inside of me.

You know I don't see why I should be the criminal
How can something with no recorded fatalities be illegal
And how many deaths are there per year from alcohol
I just completed Gran Tourismo on the hardest setting
We pose no threat on my settee
Ooh the pizza's here will someone let him in please
We didn't order chicken, Not a problem we'll pick it out
I doubt they meant to mess us about
After all we're all adults not louts.
As I was saying, we're friendly peaceful people
We're not the ones out there causing trouble.
We just sit in this hazy bubble with our quarters
Discussing how beautiful Gail Porter is.
MTV, BBC 2, Channel 4 is on until six in the morning.
Then at six in the morning the sun dawns and it's my bedtime.

Causing trouble, your stinking rabble
Boys saying I'm the lad who's spoiling it
You're on drugs it really bugs me when people try and tell me I'm a thug
Just for getting drunk
I like getting drunk
Cause I'm an upstanding citizen
If a war came along I'd be on the front line with em.

Now Terry you're repeating yourself
But that's okay drunk people can't help that.
A chemical reaction happening inside your brain causes you to forget what you're saying.

What. I know exactly what I'm saying
I'm perfectly sane
You stinking student lameo
Go get a job and stop robbing us of our taxes.

Err, well actually according to research
Government funding for further education pales in insignificance
When compared to how much they spend on repairing
Leery drunk people at the weekend
In casualty wards all over the land.

Why you cheeky little swine come here
I'm gonna batter you. Come here.

Both good points.
If the government legalized it,
they could tax it and make $$$$$$$,
in addition to saving money by not prosecuting
and incarcerating victimless "criminals".

I'm happy to report that, in Massachusetts, now,
you only get a ticket for anything under an ounce.

Its a step in the right direction.

Hey there V!

Interesting topic..
I personally think weed and alcohol are very similar.
I don't see anything wrong with making it legal. Just like alcohol, they would have to establish a way to monitor it, but that would just take time.
And you put someone drunk next to someone stoned and I doubt you'd be able to tell much of a diff without a breath test...

Mass, eh? lol

Very good points, winner.

i also think it medicates a lot of people with anxiety and relieves them from anxiety related health problems. i would rather see those people do a natural medication than reaching for a valium or xanax which is addictive and actually makes anxiety worse in the long run.

yes its funny how addicted people get to a basically non-addictive substance. just goes to show addiction is in the person not the substance...give a pothead a few days off the stuff and they come back, whereas with alcohol it can take a lifetime to get straight. drunks are notoriously difficult on OR off the stuff.

some of the claims for marijuana are a little overthetop or subjective, but it does tend to be a more peaceful state of mind than the alky kind, and actually has some very GOOD effects on the respiratory system.

marijuana aside hemp was the US's first billion dollar crop. paper, cloth, a long list of products made from this plant were superior to their modern counterparts, and for the ecology a hemp crop grows up in a season while trees and oil (yes hemp can be used to make plastics and fuel too) take decades and eons to renew....

T,

Jerks get nasty when they cant get what they want right away.

I see it all the time. I don't think it has anything to do with pot.

All of the chronic pot smokers I know are more miserable than not. Their kids are miserable too. Even the gentle John Denver types. And they are all addicted. Call it what you want... psychological vs biological etc. - they are as addicted as you can get. My ex-lover used to say... "the lows equal the highs".

I guess you could say their violence is more inner directed so the point that people on alcohol are more outer violence directed makes sense and appears to be true at first consideration.

well i know plenty of people who have smoked it on and off for decades. they might go to bed earlier when they're smoking, or sit around listening to music more, but otherwise they are pretty much unfazed by it...when they can't get any they don't climb walls and when they can they still go to work and do a good job...

seems to me most of us are addicted to something, be it money, alcohol, drugs, sugar, our partners...i would rather see non-violent productive addicts than otherwise! the weekly paycheck and sugar seem to me to be the most pervasive addictions in our current world...

katatonic,
Yes, I was just sharing my experience but you may very well be right. I haven't decided yet on this one. I wrote this:

My ex lover was abusive due to his damaged way of viewing the world which is a combination and culmination of effects of forces acting on his life experiences since before he was even born.

and then Cut it because it needed more and I was too tired to support the argument/ explain why that was relevant. But I was saying (in my manner) that people who are miserable are more drawn etc. so it could be chocolate... not chocolate's fault... etc basically the same place you went with it.

It is about escape. It dulls the frontal lobe (task master) of the brain.

hi mystic, i know there are plenty of people who ARE seriously addicted to weed. i don't mean to negate your experience. but i have seen so many high achievers also who smoke day-in and day-out, yet when there is none around, they are just fine.

i think if you want an escape there is no end to vehicles. personally i never found it much good as a painkiller, quite the opposite, i would get "stuck" on my pain when stoned! some people get nicer when they've had a drink. and some people go berserk when robbed of their daily routine!

hmmm... interesting. I think it is important to explore this topic. Thanks for sharing, obviously you are right that different personalities also respond differently. Some are more dependent, some more easily addicted and controlled... some just give up all of their power because they are despondent and don't care. I guess that is why chronic use can affect a certain group of teenagers so drastically.

i know people get addicted to many things including thier routine.
i get terrible headaches if i don't get my caffiene.
i think as a drug alcohol is more dangerous, but that is just my opinion.
