Hey all

I've just bought a double bed with a footboard and headboard, sort of a ladder Shaker-style happening (so, not a lot of solid wood, in terms of area). It's pine and not particularly interesting.

I have my eye on this here paint: http://www.homebase.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=20001&partNumber=294194

For those who can't open or can't be fussed it's a water based eggshell paint in a delightful shade of eau-de-nil. Nom Nom. It's 750ml.

Questions questions, always with the questions:

Will I need to use a primer first?
Will 750ml be enough?

Thankee kindly.

Nosis, do you know how much coverage I can get with 750ml? This paint's quite expensive and being a skinflint I'd like to get away with buying only one pot! hahhaaa

I would use a primer with eggshell wheels but if you want to use something phenomenal try Crown Cupboard paint. No primer, dries rock hard so you can abuse it and gives a wonderful finish and I think comes in the colour you want.
If not I know Dulux do an eau de nil in their cupboard paint.
I once transformed kitchen units with this stuff. They were old, had been painted with emulsion(!)and I thought "New kitchen needed here"
And then I thought "Twelve quid? Give it a whirl"
And lo! The kitchen angels came and all shone around"
I came back in the next day and I was like
"Whoaaaa!! Am I in wrong house?
Fabulous!

For a footboard and a headboard, I think you might be ok.

I guess it would all depend on how many coats you're looking to apply. I'd be skeptical that 750 mL would get you more than one coat, though. But you might not really need more than that.

use a primer and eggshell but first you have to sand your wood cos it will have a wax on it!

It's rare you can buy anything wooden that has nothing put onto the surface.

Good luck!

so you can abuse it

Well, bunnies ma dear, a girl after my own heart. Yes, for a bed that has to take the kind of sustained and relentless abuse that mine will (praise be to Allah) then the cupboard paint sounds magic.

Thanks all for your help!! The bed arrived and it's very nice. Only £95, a bargain-busting good find I reckon!

I just bought a new bed for 500 quid. With a luxury orthopaedic mattress ~ a little bit of quality for an aging Leonine Mars.

Oooh, there's posh BM! I haven't got a mattress yet, they're soooo expensive! I'm sleeping on a camp-bed next to my new bed. Tragic!

If I had your artistic skills I would have done the same with the frame. But I would still invest in a decent mattress having slept on a folded down sofa bed for a couple of years. My poor little back!
