Hello!

I finally figured out how to download a youtube video onto a flash drive, but my Windows media player won't play it, says it needs codecs, one or more missing.

I have updated with Windows their codecs, but from what I understand, the player may need one it does not offer.

My AVI is turned on, I have trouble-shot all that I can think of.

Any advice?

Any safe sites to download more codecs?

Much thanks!!!

Hey

If you have downloaded a video from Youtube, its probably in an .FLV format (this is the file extension at the end of the file name).

There are a number of programs you can use to convert an FLV file to a WMV file. A WMV file is compatible with windows media player.
Here is a link for one such program. http://www.nchsoftware.com/prism/plus.html
Click the download on the right hand side of the page.

When you have downloaded it, follow the instructions below to convert the file:-

1/ Click add files in top right hand corner
2/ Change the Output Format to WMV in the bottom left hand corner (or MP4) if you want to eventually add it to a portable media device.
3/ Click Browse in the bottom right hand corner and select the folder you wish to save it to.
4/ Click Convert in the bottom right hand corner.

If your file extension is different than FLV, let me know.

Thank you for your replies!

Betelgeuse

The url for the vid I downloaded ends in oc16dI, but I am curious, the link you sent, if I am able to use it, does it replace Windows media player? Or is is used instead of or an adjunct to?

I upgraded to WMP 11 and still no difference, same message. Is there a codec code for youtube vids?

Yin, thanks for the link! I will watch tomorrow, (am off now to shoot pics of a local band.) I have figured out how to download the vid by converting it, it is my media player that is giving me grief, maybe in the link you posted they will address that.

Thanks again! Trying to help a beautiful guitarist, who is without internet, learn something from his newest guitar hero, Johnny A.

Hippi,
www.savevid.com for downloading and saving YouTube videos to your PC.
Total Video Converter for converting the .flv files to a WMP compatible format like .avi.
All according to the video above.
Betelgeuse's recommendation is also very good.

Hey,

I don't think the extension you provided is the actual file extension name, its probably just the name of the file itself.
If you use the following site to download videos from youtube:- http://youtubeloader.com/index.php
You can then use the software either provided my Yin or myself to convert the FLV file to a WMV file. Windows Media player is most likely not playing the file because it is in a format it doesnt recognise, hence why its asking for codecs.

.FLV and .SWF files are flash files so you won't be able to play it with media player.

The best option is to convert the .FLV file.

There are some .FLV video player softwares you can download and install to play .FLV movie files on your desktop without having to be online that work similar to Windows Media Player

But, there mostly third party so its a litle sketchy...

Just type it in and find it on google, Don't it get it confused with the plugin thought.

I know .FLV video files are a pain, there great for web because the video file is smaller, but .WMV files are also good for web makes you wonder why there not used as much.
