I had a worrying pop-up that appeared on my pc today and since then I've been looking for programs to scan my pc. I clicked on two of them and they did the scan (each coming up with a different number of problems/ infections) but both of these programs parading as "free" wanted money from me to fix them.

I uploaded AVG free edition today.

Does anybody have any advice on the best thing to do about the infections/ threats apparently already on my pc? Are those websites just a con?

Most of you are more knowledgeable than me.

A friend of mine just got WinPC Antivirus - a nasty malware and her PC is now trash!

I'm doing a full scan of my pc right now using Mircosoft Malicious Software Removal Tool from the website below, and it appears my computer is uninfected. The other websites may have been trying to con people into buying their product by making it appear their computers are infected.

This is the website for the tool, it looks like one of the best websites:

You can try AdAware, and Spybot Search & Destroy. Both of those have real, free versions. I think Panda will do a free scan. I seem to remember that they'd do a fix, but I'm not positive. There is tons of advice on the internet, though. Search for whatever weird thing you're getting, and there's bound to be advice on how to rid yourself of it.

Don't go wiping your hard drive, except as a very last resort.

listenstotrees,

Yes, those softwares are a Con, they are built on purpose to find something wrong.

Then they download software that isn't friendly.

AVG is a pretty good software. Same with Panda,Panda got an award several years back less know is Webroot, rumur has it banks use it.

Just keep an eye if you notice anying odd, like the mouse moving by itself or your PC taking longer then usally to load.

Intresting, I was informed to download the Mircosoft Malicious Software Removal Tool along time ago to protect myself from the conflicker virus, that never rally happened.

Anyway, thats a first good step you download and installed it.
