Short and sweet, last Saturday I not only hosted (personally, not biz) a special b-day for a young girl, which included an intricate Hannah Montana theme, but actually arranged for much of it & organize its activities. I did it because her mom got very sick and I kinda took over for awhile, and with just a little money from her mom (and my own--I didn't get paid for this, either), I made sure she got a party she'd love. Her little brother likes me, A LOT. First Sunday in August, he turns 7. He wants me to go all out for him like I did his sister, and I'm willing, because I don't want him to think that I "like him less" or some such. But what's tripping me up is that he wants a Transformers theme. Getting the favors, props, and cake for this should be extremely easy thanks to the movie, but I know NOTHING firsthand about Transformers...though I expected to be dragged to see it, I haven't even seen the new movie (but he has). But I did just find out that the Transformer movie (both former and current) are PG-13. And this scene pops into my head: we promise to show the movie but then a good friend of his won't be allowed to come because we're showing a PG-13 movie, and we'll have to drop the movie which will be disappointing and possibly cause trouble for the innocent kid (especially by those in the habit of watching rated-R slasher flicks with their parents blessing). But it SEEMS easy enough to get OLDER movies, so I expect that's doable (if I do it in the next few days or find it for sale at a video store). But are these any good? Any guys here see Transformers (cartoon) when they were around 7? If so, what did you think? And do you think it could still be cool if you've seen the new movies? (REMEMBER, children do NOT have nostalgia influencing their judgment, so please leave that out of yours!) Maybe I should I just skip the idea of a movie completely? While I'm at it, any ideas or tips on making this a b-day he loves? He wants one as good as his sisters...but I suspect their tween activities (including dressing up as HM characters, playing with wigs, very girly pinata, playing the Hannah Uno Spin Card Game, using a pink karaoke machine with floral designs and singing along with Hannah/Miley, Duff, Selena, Emily Osment, Taylor Swift, JoBros, etc, isn't what he had in mind). My immediate plans include finding Transformer games & handing out toys and treats I bake in Transformer shapes as prizes (in addition to what I already got the b-day boy as a present, I'm thinking of getting him a Transformers sleeping bag, since he's interested in camping, and since it's bigger than anything else, hopefully he'll think he got the coolest Transformers swag...I don't want anyone else's prize to overshadow his own gifts). I'm thinking of getting the materials for them to make Transformers masks and they can even have a battle between the good & bad guys (that will need more thought, for which I'm very open to suggestions, but I figure it will be a hit). I think making a pinata of one of the bad robots would also be good. Any other suggestions? And if anyone has a Transformers for Dummies site that explains the story short & sweet for noobs, or tell me what I MUST know about Transformers & their story (dumbed down for a noob), I'd very much appreciate it! (I've already know about Transformers Wiki, btw.) Also, what I should keep in mind if I go see the movie now playing (natch, for dealing with little boys, not grown fanboys). Given that I've got less than a month to pull this off (and I like having everything I need in my possession--things like cake excluded, of course--AT LEAST a week in advance), I'm feeling nervous, because I want to do this right. There was a cartoon movie made years ago.. in the 80's, I think. I just remember it had that song "the final countdown", lol. I had some friends who thought it was the coolest movie ever, so, maybe you could go with that. Really cool of you to be doing these things. IP: Logged |

Good luck, dervish -- sounds like a lot of fun :-D My 13yo still has his Optimus Prime..... ..... and Megatron Transformers..... This is Bumblebee, I think: The storyline: Amazon.com The Transformers Animated series continues to reinvent the venerable robot-action franchise in fresh and often inventive ways, as evidenced by the adventures compiled in its sophomore season. The action picks up directly after the conclusion of Season 1, during which the city of Detroit was leveled in a battle between the Autobots and the Decepticons. The cause of that fight--the AllSpark, source of life for all Transformers--was also destroyed, but all parties soon discover that the cube exists in fragmentary form in various locations around the globe. The recovery of these pieces naturally forms the crux of Season 2, though there is also the issue of The Key--the second greatest power in Transformers lore, and which currently resides in the precocious form of pre-teen Sari Sumdac. The Autobots must also concern themselves with protecting their precious human charge and worry about Starscream (voiced by Tom Kenney of Spongebob Squarepants), who harbors both a fragment of the AllSpark in his body and a long-simmering grudge against both the Autobots and Decepticons. If that sounds like a lot to digest, it's not--each episode neatly advances the central storylines while providing the required level of Transformers action and intrigue. The main strike against the show may be its overly stylized character design, which tends to rend humans in curious ways. That, however, should have only minimum impact on the show's core audience of younger viewers and franchise devotees. All 13 episodes of Transformers Animated's second season are contained in the two-disc set; a pair of commentaries on the final two episodes by the show's production team should prove interesting to those interested in the creative and conceptual aspects of the show.
