I found this on another website, and am thinking of answering the questions every week. (The people I know who are doing this, answer them every Sunday.) I just thought I'd pass them along, in case anyone here would be interested.

1. What did I learn this past week?

2. What was my greatest accomplishment over the past week?

3. Which moment from last week was the most memorable and why?

4. What’s the #1 thing I need to accomplish this week?

5. What can I do right now to make the week less stressful?

6. What have I struggled with in the past that might also affect the upcoming week?

7. What was last week’s biggest time sink?

8. Am I carrying any excess baggage into the week that can be dropped?

9. What have I been avoiding that needs to get done?

10. What opportunities are still on the table?

11. Is there anyone I’ve been meaning to talk to?

12. Is there anyone that deserves a big ‘Thank You’?

13. How can I help someone else this coming week?

14. What are my top 3 goals for the next 3 years?

15. Have any of my recent actions moved me closer to my goals?

16. What’s the next step for each goal?

17. What am I looking forward to during the upcoming week?

18. What are my fears?

19. What am I most grateful for?

20. If I knew I only had one week to live, who would I spend my time with?

(I found them here - a site that I really need to spend more time on - and Josh found them here.)

Why Sunday?
And what do you do if you are horribly depressed and these questions about achievement and goals just freak you out and make you even more depressed?

I would think that doing something like this would make you come out of a depression. To reflect on what you accomplished/or didn't. And to look forward to focus on how you can improve the next week's outlook. Especially once you see the results.

I don't know if I'd have the self discipline to do this every week, but the idea is great.

LOL, Abs. Easier said than done.
Yes, I was teasing about the day issue but not the other. Can somebody explain to me WHY achievement is supposed to feel good? Why do we need to make plans and have goals?
Are we conditioned to feel this way? Is it some innate biological urge? Recommended reading?
Does anyone else ask themselves that?

I think it's probably first a possible biological issue, stemming from when we used to have to hunt and gather, before agriculture was discovered.

And the other part, is societal. Especially in Western Culture, and lots post Industrial Revolution, imo, it's where are you on the social status, and how can you get higher.

And also maybe personal fulfillment, for some. As in "YEAH, I finished the Boston Marithon!!! GO me! WHOOT!"

Or, hey I taught myself how to knit, and now I made this really awesome afghan, how cool!

It gives a warm fuzzy feeling inside.

I can see why knitting a sweater can make you feel warm on the outside as well and possibly justify feeling warm on the inside too, but The Boston Marathon? If there were no other runners or if you were considered a big loser when you finished last, would people still get the same feelings? No. That's conditioning. (It was a fine example, really.)
Do we do these things only because they make us feel good? Is that a good enough reason? We get a praise for running the marathon regardless of place. It makes us feel good so we do it again. We are looked up to if we earn more money or do what we like for a living or have some talent in anything... It makes us feel good, gets us "high" so we want to do it again. We play the game, we get rewarded so we do it again. Are we just weak?

I don't have much time to articulate my thought on the subject any clearer...
Anyone know of a good book?

i would think even finishing last in a marathon would be a great accomplishment. we all define our own goals. even if it is simply i will remain sober today..or i did not drink coffee today. hoorrray for me!
if we had zero goals and zero desire to accomplish anything, what is the purpose of living or getting out of bed? if we have depression, getting out of bed may very well BE a goal. it should be internal and not external, set for oneself not by society. a dogs goal for bringing you his leash is the reward of a walk. even animals do it. good list teasel. hard to incorporate weekly, but good things to ask oneself none the less.

i think then what you ask yin is it weak to want thsese things. is it weak for a dog to like to go for a walk, or is it just his nature? why would it be considered selfish or weak to do the things we like, i consider doing what one loves to do truly living and not just existing. the ability to rise above the mundane and do it to me shows a strenght, not a weakness.

to ask yourself how did i waste time this week, makes next week easier to skip over that and spend more time doing what we love.

sharing and doing for others brings a reward of its own and was wisely incorporated into the equation.

**We are looked up to if we earn more money or do what we like for a living or have some talent in anything... It makes us feel good, gets us "high" so we want to do it again. We play the game, we get rewarded so we do it again. Are we just weak?**

if we had a talent for painting and it is an outward expression of what lies inside of us, how is that in any way weak? it is being who we were made to be.

our lungs reward our body for breathing by sending oxygen thoughout our bodies, is it a weakness to breathe? certainly not. we are doing what we were made to do.

how can it ever be considered a weakness to outwardly express what is inside of us? i don't get it.

maybe later you can explain better so i understand what you are saying... if you are inclined.

Hi cpn, it's not the expression by itself, it's the fact that it makes us feel good that I want to understand. I didn't say it was weakness, only asked if it was a weakness. We probably produce oxytocin during performing these acts. Oxytocin gives you the warm cuddly feeling. But we have the ability to reason and ask questions too, like: Are we just slaves to our biochemistry? How much of it is actual conditioning? Can we influence oxytocin production? I think we can.

I saw this documentary on happiness. Children who were adopted could not produce oxytocin given the same triggers as the other children. Kinda scary.

**Are we just slaves to our biochemistry?**
perhaps, most likely a combination of conditioning and biochemistry.

interesting question.

similar to environment vs. hereditary traits. i imagine both have input.

however, i personally believe conditioning and environment counts for less than hereditary DNA and biochemistry. like if someone had extra high levels of oxytocin production, i can't see environmental or conditioning holding them into patterns. Too many stories of extreme successes born into impoverished cirrcumstances. so it tells me it is internal not external that carries the most weight. just my thoughts on it. i could be wrong.

i missed this**I saw this documentary on happiness. Children who were adopted could not produce oxytocin given the same triggers as the other children. **...that is very interesting. I was asked the other day why it mattered to me who my real biological father is still, i have a wonderful dad who adopted me and raised me,,which is very true. i don't know why the wanting to know never goes away, but it never does.

i would be interested to see that documentary yin.

I'm really depressed right now. I was hoping that it would help me to move forward in ways that I want to, and just wanted to share.

I understand that some have an allergic reaction to the word 'should', so I almost deleted it. How about every month? Every six months, adjusting the wording as necessary? I don't know - don't do it at all, if you don't want to. I only posted it for those who might find it helpful.

Teasel,

Dearheart. Thank you for sharing. I appreciate it very much!

Please don't be vexed that it spurred conversation.

There's always a light at the end of the tunnel. Truly.

Teasel, did you try using the questions this week? I'm really happy you posted them here for us all to see and use them ourselves if we wish. I think they are good questions that can help a person focus on how they spent their time, which in turn can help them decide how to spend time more thoughtfully. I'm going to print them out to answer weekly over the next few weeks to see if it's helpful to me.

For a few years I kept a journal in which I answered every night two questions: 1) What did I learn today? and 2) What am I grateful for today? It was a good experience.

thanks for sharing teasel...i know what you mean about the word should but it is nice to see your version of self-inquiry.

yin i think i see what you're asking, and i tend to think that "accomplishment" is not necessary...just being is enough. but setting ourselves goals helps us understand our being better, and subjecting our goals and actions to inquiry aids in that process...? but no i don't think we are slaves to our biochemistry since it has been proven we can ALTER it by actions like meditating and chanting, and by accomplishing things!! full circle...

and cpn yes dna etc count for most i think but as in the okinawa study it was found that okinawans who leave and discontinue that lifestyle and diet lose their "longevity" too...so environment and conditioning are also pretty close runners up imo

Well it's Sunday today so I will do this - just quickly (some answers are just blabber though lol I'm too sleepy to do it seriously)..

1. What did I learn this past week?

I learned not to take offense and wait until things are explained.

2. What was my greatest accomplishment over the past week?

A paper I was writing on which worked out really well and received praise.

3. Which moment from last week was the most memorable and why?

My dog barked in a funny way - it really sounded like "hello".. I guess it's memorable because it was so strange lol I wish I had it on tape.

4. Whats the #1 thing I need to accomplish this week?

I have to complete a presentation.

5. What can I do right now to make the week less stressful?

Work LOL
I can work..

6. What have I struggled with in the past that might also affect the upcoming week?

ummmmm insecurities about... (yes) - my work.

7. What was last week's biggest time sink?

It was all pretty neutral - I didn't have a serious "sink".

8. Am I carrying any excess baggage into the week that can be dropped?

I was and I've already dropped it. YaY.

9. What have I been avoiding that needs to get done?

lol...Work.. (once again)

10. What opportunities are still on the table?

Lots. Kind of broad question lol

11. Is there anyone I've been meaning to talk to?

Yes - there is.. and thanks for reminding me

12. Is there anyone that deserves a big Thank You?

My mum because she's awesome. She deserves a few big thank yous, especially this past week.

13. How can I help someone else this coming week?

hmmm This particular week I'm focusing on me only.. because I have a lot to do.
But if anything comes up, I'll happily lend a hand.

14. What are my top 3 goals for the next 3 years?

1. travel overseas and see family & friends.
2. finish PhD.
2. work at *insert firm name*

15. Have any of my recent actions moved me closer to my goals?

Yes definitely.

16. What's the next step for each goal?

1. I'm saving $.
2. I'm conscientiously doing my writing.
3. That just follows on from what I'm studying and my connections.

17. What am I looking forward to during the upcoming week?

Nothing much.. Just work really.

18. What are my fears?

hmmm I don't know. I can't think of any off the top of my head.

19. What am I most grateful for?

Nature.

20. If I knew I only had one week to live, who would I spend my time with?

Interesting one...

Mum, Celeste (my bff), Mr. Leo, my puppy, my Libra ex, my auntie, my cousin, throw in my dad (I'd kinda like to see him if this was the case, even though we're more like slightly detached "friends"), oh there must be others but they're probably slipping my mind right now.

If I had to pick just one person - then it is definitely my mum. I feel closest to my mum.

The End... lol
