my mother in law taught me to use honey and vinegar instead of chemical cough syrup. it works at least as well and is reassuringly GOOD for you and yours...

and boric acid is a great eyewash for inflamed eyes...even though it says FOR EXTERNAL USE ONLY on the bottle, a 1/4 tsp to a cup of boiled and cooled water works wonders...this from a nurse/mother of 8 i knew only briefly.

boric acid, or borax, is also a great bug dehydrater (like ditamaceous earth) and in solution a great wash to prevent mold...

Generic saline disinfectant solution for contact lenses is boric acid and salt water. The non-generics have other things or are much stronger and burn your eyes if you put it into your eyes, but the generics (walmart, walgreens) are great pre-made eye wash.

Steep three tea bags in a cup of boiling water. Squeeze the juice of three lemons into it. Add honey. Add a shot of whiskey.

The whiskey supposedly kills the bacteria in your throat. The honey coats it. The tea breaks up congestion, and the lemon does something, I can't remember what.

I go to. a a very old bartender lady when I am sick, she makes this for me, and the next day I feel much better. NyQuil has nothing on this rememdy.
