The Canadian-American(Can-Am) Grand National Cross Country Series is America's premier off-road racing series. Founded in 1979, the 13-round championship is produced exclusively by Racer Productions. Cross country racing is one of the most physically demanding sports in the world. The grueling three-hour GNCC races lead as many as 1,800 riders through tracks ranging in length from eight to twelve miles, competing for more than $3 million in prizes. With varied terrain, including hills, woods, mud, dirt, rocks and motocross sections, GNCC events are tests of both survival and speed. The GNCC events attract riders from all 50 states and around the world.

GNCC History

Dave Coombs promoted various motorcycle races across the country and in 1975 he was contacted by a preacher at a church in a small town in West Virginia. The preacher wanted to help the economy of his struggling town by hosting a motorcycle race. Dave Coombs saw major potential in the land and thought that a grand prix style race through the town and surrounding country side would be special enough to bring visitors to the town.

He named the race The Blackwater 100. The name "Blackwater" comes from nearby Blackwater Falls and 100 for the number of miles in the race. The land was rugged and the race was tough. In fact, The Blackwater was known as "America's Toughest Race","The Indy 500 of off-road racing" or "The Father's Day Massacre". The race became even more popular when Dave invited a group of magazine editors from California, who went back and wrote about their experiences with the rugged race.

Some examples.

Dirt Bike

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motocross

Motocross is a form of motorcycle sport or all-terrain vehicle racing held on enclosed off road circuits. It evolved from trials, and was called scrambles, and later motocross, combining the French moto with cross-country. BMX, or bicycle motocross, is the equivalent sport for non-motorized dirt bikes.

ATV

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All-terrain_vehicle

An all-terrain vehicle (ATV), also known as a quad, quad bike, three wheeler, or four wheeler, is defined by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) as a vehicle that travels on low pressure tires, with a seat that is straddled by the operator, along with handlebars for steering control.

UTV

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Side_by_Side_%28UTV%29

The Side by Side is a small 2-person or 4 person four-wheel drive off-road vehicle, also called UTV (Utility Task Vehicle) or ROV (Recreational Off highway Vehicle)

This is a motorsport for men and women.

http://www.yamaha-motor.com/sport/racing/traci_cecco.aspx

Traci Cecco is the all-time Grand National Cross Country (GNCC) women’s champion holding a record seven titles.

Traci Cecco first found herself on an ATV when she was 10 years old. She started riding with her dad, mainly for fun. It wasn't until she was about 16 years old that racing ATVs showed up on her radar. Back then it was because she enjoyed beating the boys.

Fast forward to 2011, and Traci is not only the winningest woman in ATV racing, but she is internationally known and was recognized by Moves magazine as a “2010 Power Woman".

"I am very competitive," says Traci. "There's nothing better than getting out there and proving to everyone that a girl can go just as fast and ride the same tracks and trails as everyone else."

These days, Traci is beating everyone - men and women - on a regular basis in the GNCC Series.

http://espn.go.com/action/athlete/_/id/49971/maria-forsberg

Arguably the fastest female in off-road (desert and woods) racing, Forsberg won 5 straight World Off-Road Championship Series titles (WORCS) out West (2005, '06, '07, '08, '09) and then moved to the Eastern U.S. Grand National Cross Country Series, won the 2010 title there, and leads the 2011 standings.

Amazingly, she fits her riding and practice in despite working a full-time job as a union electrician in her native Seattle, taking a red-eye flight out on Friday night, racing all weekend, then flying home Sunday night before heading to work at 6:30 a.m. on Monday.

Due to her off-road skills, Forsberg is a favorite for women's Enduro X gold.

1993 Cr250R. (My cousin had one, I cant remember if it was a 93 or a 94. I love the fluorescent red of those model years. )

Example:

This is what I remember most, a two-stroke wide open on the power, climbing a hill with the rider hanging on. Rear tire fish-tailing, trying to find grip.

One other class of ATV's is the Utility Quad. These have four wheel drive, and some have automatic transmissions and power steering. People adapted their hunting quads for racing, and now some companies offer sport utility versions that are better for racing.

Examples, you will notice the front tires look different than the racing two wheel drive quads I have shown in this thread. These are heavier machines also.

I am not finding any race video's on youtube for these to link right now, So I just found something suitable.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hare_scramble

Hare scramble is the name given to a particular form of off-road motorcycle racing. Traditionally a hare scramble can vary in length and time with the contestants completing multiple laps around a marked course through wooded or other rugged natural terrain. The overall winner is awarded to the contestant who maintains the highest speed throughout the event.

Hare scrambles are conducted on closed course tracks which can vary from 2.5 to 40+ miles (8 to 64+km) in length. The terrain chosen for these events is wooded and fairly rugged in order to test the riders' skills and endurance. The majority of the course consists of a wooded, single and double width trail, with occasional pasture and sand crossings. An event may incorporate a short portion of a pre-existing motocross track. The natural terrain tests the riders' abilities to navigate through obstacles such as creek beds, logs, hills, mud, rocks and ruts.

http://www.dirt-bike-tips-and-pics.com/2-stroke-dirt-bike.html

The modern 2 stroke dirt bike engine is a work of art. The real magic is in the simplicity of it. The 'power center' has only three primary moving parts... the piston, connecting rod, and crankshaft.Unlike 4 strokes, the 2 stroke engine does not have valves. This contributes to their lighter weight.

The two stroke engine fires (produces power) once every revolution of the crankshaft. Whereas a four stroke fires once every other revolution. This is why the two stroke engine can pack twice the amount of 'bang' than an equivalent sized four stroker, which requires four strokes of the piston to get one ignition.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two-stroke_engine

A two-stroke engine is an internal combustion engine that completes the process cycle in one revolution of the crankshaft (an up stroke and a down stroke of the piston, compared to twice that number for a four-stroke engine). This is accomplished by using the end of the combustion stroke and the beginning of the compression stroke to perform simultaneously the intake and exhaust (or scavenging) functions. In this way, two-stroke engines often provide high specific power, at least in a narrow range of rotational speeds.

The functions of some or all of the valves required by a four-stroke engine are usually served in a two-stroke engine by ports that are opened and closed by the motion of the piston(s), greatly reducing the number of moving parts. Gasoline (spark ignition) versions are particularly useful in lightweight (portable) applications, such as chainsaws, and the concept is also used in diesel compression ignition engines in large and weight insensitive applications, such as ships and locomotives.

Flow is the mental state of operation in which a person in an activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and success in the process of the activity. Proposed by Mihály Csíkszentmihályi, the positive psychology concept has been widely referenced across a variety of fields.
