There are a few hermaphrodites or intersex people on this site (who may self-identify differently, I don't know at this point), which prompted me to look into the extraordinary lives of this special type of person, and I am deeply grateful that I have done so. It has allowed me to let go of even more unconscious prejudice.

With that in mind, this was on the front page of yahoo news today: http://gma.yahoo.com/blogs/abc-blogs/man-admitted-h ospital-kidney-stone-discovers-hes-woman-110057308--abc-news-health.html

How many people go through life with hidden sex organs they never learn about? How many "gays" are actually responding to female hormones coming from actual female sex organs within?

It's more common than we think.

Another reason to be accepting and tolerant of others. We really have no idea what they are dealing with.

And I do wonder if anyone has information about planetary influences giving rise to an intersex child being conceived?

This is a fictional example, but on "Freaks and Geeks", the band girl that dates Ken is intersex. I forget which episode it is, but it's one of the only examples of such a character that comes to mind.

I'd be curious to hear from more intersex people and also find examples of other characters and how they're portrayed.

As for gay people, none that I know personally are intersex or identify as female (they post a lot of stuff about those issues/their thoughts on that). Given that they're pretty open about being gay/LGBT issues, they probably would have said something if they were, as they're all about pride/are all big parts of the movement for equal rights and respect. If they aren't actually male, I'd be shocked.

I don't think that gay people are just "pretending" or that they are not actually gay/that they're actually intersex. Maybe some, but not most. To my understanding, about 10% of the human population is gay/lesbian, and it's related to genetics/possibly womb environment. Of course, some people are bi, too.

I'm not aware that I know any inter-sex person myself. So I don't have much to add to the topic, I'm afraid. Except that I think it's a good one in terms of making everyone more aware and perhaps increasing tolerance in general.

Platero: Wow, that's interesting about the character being intersex...I have been wondering how much this topic is addressed in popular culture. But I have no TV and don't watch many movies, so I can't gauge it well.

The article I posted does make me wonder how many people out there have never been tested but are actually intersex. I'll bet there are a LOT!

Today I walked past a cross dresser (?) or hermaphrodite (?) or manly looking woman while entering a store. I wanted to express my newfound compassion but this person was wearing a transparent blouse and I couldn't act normal while being flashed.

(Tangent: So I've realized I really like modest clothing no matter what sex a person is. Then I can say "HI" better. This is important to me because when I passed the person with the see-through blouse, he or she made a nice comment to me about my children, but I was too flustered to reply. I think common courtesy still stands, that you meet a person halfway and don't put crazy demands on them, like semi-flashing them while otherwise greeting them normally.)

Linda: Thanks for your comment, I agree completely. Anything that shows us the way to tolerance and understanding, I want to explore!

This is too funny!
