Well after pouring through the forums I chose this one to post this.

I love to laugh n smile, tho recently seems I have let myself lose alot of both.

I am at work now, this is my Friday, my third day and as I sit here, looking at both of my patients, a slight smile has returned.

Not in the way I would have expected it, no not at all....

An elderly lady who had polio years ago, terribly deformed, nursing home and life support dependent, smiles at me, when I do something silly like accidentally spray her with water. But today I smile at her courage and her very hard life path she has endured.

My other patient a young lady who is also ventilator dependent due to her husband setting fire to her as she slept with their children in the house because she was divorcing him. I smile at her passion for life and her commitment to her kids. With burns to over eighty percent of her body, and her lungs charred, the likelihood for her living long is slim to none.

I smile at myself at being able to finally see the beauty in life again, albeit thought human pain.

And I smile at my gift for being able to be present with these opportunities three days a week.

Blessings!

Thank you for sharing, this is the first post I read today. Brought tears to my eyes.
Human pain is often the greatest of teachers, so I have found.

Awww, thank you all for replying~

Sun, you know, when I get this down, I always know something, usually humbling will eventually come my way and I will be at peace again. Kind of caught me off guard that I saw the beauty in pain....at half a century old, I finally learned, only a coupla years ago, that our relations with others is to teach about us, not them..

Ami...well what can I say...you are such a blessing to us all.

RAS, actually, I once did start a book about my "spiritual" encounters with the lives I cross on my nursing path, but I became disenchanted with the whole thing when I changed hospitals and just was not ful-filled like I had been. Funny, this hospital system I recently took employment with was the one I grew up, as a baby nurse at, went to two other systems and now am back to the original, and feeling literarly ispired again...but back then I was looking for profound spiritual truths in my encounters, now as I mentioned in my response to Sun, it is about what I have learned about me...

blessins...all

You make me cry, Hippi! I was feeling so worthless, today. What beautiful words you had for me. Thank you! I will hold them close to my heart.

RAS, my late (husband) well more like the father of my children, we were high school sweethearts, etc, shot himself in the head when I started with divorce proceedings...cause he was a beligerant alcoholic...

I searched for years, and years as to what I was to learn from that experience..from his behavior.

I thought was I supposed to learn that he was depressed, an alcoholic and nobody noticed...what was the learning.

Till one day, I realized the "learining" had to do with me, what I had learned about me not he!

I thought how simple, but how complicated at the same time.

Sigh...learning!

Ami....we are here for eachother..and that is the way human existance should be...

Well said. You hear people talking about self knowledge, then you hear people living it, as you have shared.

Aww, Hippi, beautiful indeed.

I felt the same when working with the kiddies. They were in pain and ill but always gave a smile.
It was inspirational and uplifting to witness such strength and optimism even when the odds seemed against them.

It makes us review our lives. No matter what tests or trials we have to face, there is always something to be grateful for.. always blessings to count.

Thank you so much for sharing that.

Hi Mblake~

Ya know, I think, atleast from my perspective, that most of us humaniods (subliminally) prefer to learn in hindsight...

I certainly have...

Why is this, do you suppose?

Upon contemplation, in answering my own question...

I think we as human, must experience all there is here to experience.

Without?

I just cant see the outcome of experiencing humanity without the whole "experience"

This is a beautiful thread. Good for my heart.

Hippichick, I don't know if I should ask this, but how are the burned woman's children? Did they survive? I guess I'm looking for some good news.

I'm glad those people have you for a nurse.

Its so nice to learn that i have company because i too am learning since last couple of years JUST THIS. That life is but a mirror in which we see our own reflection and learn from it. Now when i go through a situation with others or just any life situation not directly related with any person, i think what is the lesson in it for me? What am i supposed to learn? Wow!! So we are in the same grade. What did you bring in your lunch box?

Faith, the kids are older, this happened a year and a half ago, (I even looked it up on the local news link), 2 teenage boys and one in Irac at the time. They are fine, cept suffered some burns on their hands pulling their mom off the bed.

Her name is Joanne and I am sure she would appreciate any good energy sent her way, she is in the hospital now cause her lungs are finally done. She will be ventilator dependent for the rest of her days, live in a nursing home and die there. Friggin absurd

RAS I learned from the kid's dad, about me that this was my very first "red flag" relationship. Course we had been together since we were 17, but I learned that I let people walk over me way, way to much or used to , I learned that there are these red flags and boy, o, boy I should pay attention to them, but being a Pisces it is hard at times. I learned to function properly in a relationship that I must take care of me just as much as anybody else.

Love the quote!!!

Love&Light, sure if you dont mind a Scooby Do lunch box!!! Yea I spent a good long time thinking what am I supposed to be learning about something...anything, till I figured out it was me.

blessins all!!!
