By Milan Kundera.

Has anyone seen the movie or read the book?

It's about a sex addict doctor who falls completely in love with a waitress one day, to the point where he believes that he will die if anything happens to her. And she reciprocates the feeling.

So they venture into this love affair, while he openly and constantly cheats on her.

She leaves him and he endangers his life just to follow her. Very twisted.

I'm just wondering what you all think of this. Do you suppose this is a realistic story? What synastry aspects could produce that kind of situation?

And...any other opinions welcome.

I would bet anything it was Nessus/dejanira and probably Moon/Pluto too. if not Moon/Pluto then Venus/Pluto and /or Mars /Pluto

My Scorpio bestie (at the time) bought this for me, insisting I read it. That was back in high school. I gave him one of my favorites at the time called "You Forever" by T. Lobsang Rampa. He loved the book and thought I would too, so picked me up a copy. He also had a major thing for me, even though he knew we'd only be friends - i made that very clear and he was okay with it.

Anyway, I lent it out before reading it and never got it back. Other people have mentioned it over the years. I think I"ll have to put it back on my reading list.

From what you wrote here, it sounds Plutonic with maybe some Saturnine undertones....

Makes sense that a Scorp boy might give it to his Taurus girl crush. lol

Have you finished it Faith?

GIve us your thoughts whe you do

I am going to get the book.

Many of my clients have these kind of relationships, but not this severe.I can pick it up by the first e mail they send me, usually.

Nessus/Deja can make you lose your mind. When you see these public cases where a prominent guy( usually) like governor etc loses his head and runs off with someone, I would bet anything it is nessus/deja.

Hmm! Definitely Pluto!

I was actually thinking sun trine sun Not very exotic I know, but so powerful!

Also, Black Moon Lilith and planets hitting the nodes (moon conjunct south node synastry comes to mind.)

I think the girl would have to have a strong Pisces influence to accept the man, and I think that the man would have to have enough water to hold onto that Pisces.

Kundera is an Aries with a Cap moon and Pisces Mercury, I can see how he might have envisioned the male character as someone he could identify with.

-Aries sun: Needs sex, may be uncompromising

-Cap moon: Very deep and devotional, possibly mystical...yet perhaps capable of the coldness required to put someone through an ordeal like this.

- Pisces Mercury can imagine the depth of self-sacrifice people are capable of when they want to be absorbed into a soulmate situation.

LOL yes! Actually my fellow Taurus-Scorpio nodal axis ex-boyfriend told me that the book reminded him of our relationship a tiny bit. But I didn't read the book until about ten years after I stopped talking to him.

It's pretty good, more sexually graphic than I like a book to be (tmi tmi tmi) but there are some very poignant observations in there about life in general that I have kept in mind over the years.

He writes stuff like this...

quote:
“...For there is nothing heavier than compassion. Not even one's own pain weighs so heavy as the pain one feels with someone, for someone, a pain intensified by the imagination and prolonged by a hundred echoes.”

quote:
“We can never know what to want, because, living only one life, we can neither compare it with our previous lives nor perfect it in our lives to come.”

Yes, I do recommend the book. I thought of watching the movie (I love Daniel Day Lewis paired with Juliette Binoche) but...well...I actually don't like watching people kiss on screen (unless I feel like the actors in real life felt something for each other) and I never watch anything more sexually explicit than a kiss. Just my preference, not trying to sound self-righteous!

Yes. Read the book, saw the movie.
Was obsessed with Kundera for a while and read some of his other works. He is one dark and miserable mofo.
Then I had my own twisted relationship and the obsession passed, lol.
It's not hard to get into that sort of relationship, but it's impossible to come out undamaged.

I think you can come out wiser and with more humility. That happened to me.

Really? I don't remember getting that impression from Unbearable Lightness...it was dark but not miserable.

I've meant to read his other work but haven't gotten around to it. Can you recommend one book that was better than the others?

My impression of him as a writer is that he is dark and cynical.

I can't pick anything that makes me feel good by him right now.

Faith, I think i will have to check out the movie version too. Not one for books these days, concentration is shot. Wonder if the movie got as rave reviews as the book...?

Will find out at some point.

Yeah, from the little i know, and from what Yin said....dude definely had to be a Scorpio or have one of his 'big 3' there at least. Maybe some strong Pluto going on....

Will watch the movie and try to get to the book at some point too.

^ So did Milan Kundera, he hated the movie and won't sell film rights to his books anymore.

T, if you do read it, I'd love to know your opinion. For me, some of his commentary about life was so profound, it sort of lit up the book (which does have its sick undertones...I agree with Yin on that.) Really it wasn't the story that makes me recommend it but the way it's written.

although at this point, I think it's best to go with the book first. especially since he was so unhappy with the movie portrayal..
